GroupWise Chosen As Messaging System for Democratic National
Convention
GroupWise and GroupWise WebAccess Enable Democratic
National Committee to Communicate With Home Office From Convention
Floor Via the Internet
CHICAGO -- August 26, 1996 -- Novell, Inc. today
announced that the Democratic National Committee (DNC), which kicks
off its campaign convention today in Chicago, is using GroupWise 4.1
and GroupWise WebAccess to allow Committee staff to communicate
with committee headquarters from the convention floor via the Internet.
By extending the power of GroupWise via the Internet through
GroupWise WebAccess, the DNC is allowing its staff members to stay in
close contact with the home office and each other, checking E-mail in
real time, and even scheduling meetings from the convention floor during
this critical week, all without the need for dedicated phone lines and
unfamiliar communications software. After the convention, staff
members working in the field will continue to rely on GroupWise
WebAccess to keep them in close contact with headquarters.
"We chose GroupWise because it is a powerful, flexible tool for
communication and scheduling," said Brian Young, director of technology
for the Democratic National Committee. "In looking at ways to extend that
power to the convention floor, we found that GroupWise and GroupWise
WebAccess offered the most effective way for staff members to
leverage the Internet for the substantive, real-time communications
required to mobilize field offices and keep the campaign moving. In
addition, since our members already use GroupWise, there is virtually no
learning curve associated with WebAccess."
GroupWise serves as the E-mail system for the DNC, as well as the
White House and most of the Democratic party. Party members use
GroupWise to communicate with their staffs, schedule group meetings
and keep their personal calendars. The DNC has 500 seats of
GroupWise running on NetWare 4.1 at its headquarters in Washington,
D.C.
GroupWise 4.1 was the first enterprise-wide E-mail system to integrate
personal calendaring, group scheduling, voice mail, faxes, Internet
messages, task management and information access into a Universal In
Box. By enabling users to access and manage all their critical information
within a single environment, GroupWise 4.1 streamlines the electronic
communication process while ensuring efficient delivery and receipt of
messages. GroupWise leverages the network environment by integrating
with Novell networking services, such as NDS (Novell Directory
Services) and NWAdministrator, reducing the total cost of ownership
and making GroupWise the most cost-effective E-mail solution to buy,
administer and maintain.
GroupWise WebAccess is a unique intranet solution that gives
GroupWise users anytime, anyplace access to their Universal In Boxes
via the Internet and a Web browser. GroupWise WebAccess is the only
product on the market that gives users a single interface from which
they can send and retrieve E-mail, voice mail, facsimiles, calendar items,
appointments and tasks over the Internet.
GroupWise 5, Novell's premier Intranet application, which will be
introduced on September 12, is an expanded E-mail system that is the
first in the industry to include full document and image management
capabilities as part of a new Universal Mail Box. GroupWise 5 helps
companies leverage their corporate network investments by providing an
instant collaborative solution for the corporate intranet. Building on
GroupWise 4.1, GroupWise 5 seamlessly integrates
calendaring/scheduling, task management, shared folders, conferencing,
workflow and Internet access into the Universal Mail Box. Additional
