Novell's The Guide Helps Network Professionals with Certification Plan, Helps Organizations Be More Cost-Effective

'Certification Blueprint' Provides Certification Candidates and Organizations with Central Resource for Certification Information, Personal Assessment, and Return on Investment

EDGE, Dallas -- Sept. 9, 1996 -- As part of the company's annual Edge education channel conference, Novell, Inc. today provided more than 500 North American and Latin American Novell Authorized Education Center (NAEC) channel partners with advance copies of its new The Guide information and assessment tool.

A virtual "certification blueprint," The Guide is designed to help individuals and organizations determine which Novell certifications meet their needs and how they can best prepare for those certifications. The Guide includes comprehensive information on all of Novell's industry-leading certifications, including CNE®, Master CNE*, Certified Novell Administrator* (CNA*), Certified Novell Instructor* (CNI*) and the new Novell Certified Internet Professional*. In addition to program descriptions and requirements, The Guide presents users with sample test questions, simulated Novell test exercises and Novell-authorized course listings, and features the industry's first certification return-on-investment (ROI) tool.

"The Guide gives certification candidates the information they need to intelligently draft their certification path," said Gary Clark, director of skills assessment for Novell Education. "With The Guide, individuals become fully educated about the scope of Novell certification programs, as well as the knowledge and performance requirements for those certifications. The Guide then takes this one step further with assessment tests, encouraging individuals to evaluate their own readiness for Novell courses or exams by taking practice tests and then seeing how they perform."

"Education Prescription"

After completing practice tests for a given certification requirement, individuals receive what Clark calls an "education prescription" for knowledge and skills that need to be honed before completing a certification or attempting to perform associated job tasks. The Guide directs candidates needing more knowledge and practice in select areas to specific Novell-authorized education courses. More than 50 courses are offered through NAECs worldwide. Of those courses, 41 are associated with the Novell CNE, Master CNE, CNA, CNI and Novell Certified Internet Professional certifications. Depending on individual needs as determined by the assessment test, The Guide education prescription directs certification candidates to the certification-related courses, as well as more generic courses.

"The Guide's assessment tests ensure that cost-effective, time-effective training is prescribed for an individual," added Clark. "The assessment test helps the student customer select which--if any--courses are needed to supplement his or her knowledge and experience base. But this assessment test also serves to actually raise the quality of instruction from NAECs by ensuring that student customers are prepared with an adequate knowledge base to enter a given Novell course."

The Guide Differentiated by Simulated Test Exercises, Certification ROI

No other industry tool offers certification candidates assessment tests that directly simulate products used in certification testing. As a result of Novell's investment in a test simulation engine, assessment tests associated with the CNE certification require certification candidates to perform exercises with a simulated version of the NetWare 4.11 (formerly known as Green River") operating system. The simulated version used in the assessment test performs exactly as the actual NetWare product.

The Guide is also differentiated from any other industry tool in its inclusion of the Novell CNE Advisor ROI tool. Introduced in April, the Novell CNE Advisor is the first software tool to quantify the return on investment that organizations achieve by certifying their network support professionals. The tool, which has been well received by customers, the education channel and industry analysts, was developed for Novell by Interpose, Inc. Default parameter values are based on research from International Data Corp. and Strategic Research Corp.
