Novell Previews GroupWise Document Management on the Web

Next Generation of GroupWise Will Simplify Publishing and Administration of Documents to Corporate Intranets and the World Wide Web

NEW YORK -- Sept. 13, 1996 -- Novell, Inc. today previewed plans for upcoming features of GroupWise 5, its advanced client/server E-mail product and Novell's premier intranet application. Internally code-named the Jefferson Project, the technology initiative will provide a corporate solution for the creation and management of documents on the World Wide Web and corporate intranets, offering GroupWise users a means for managing the complexity corporate information on intranets and the Web. The resulting technology will allow GroupWise users to leverage the full power of the Internet for sharing information, while providing the security, management and administration features required to keep that information secure, up-to-date and easily accessible.

"Novell's vision has always been anytime access to information and people from anywhere in the world," said Stewart Nelson, vice president and general manager, Novell. "The pervasiveness of the Web and corporate intranets make this technology the next of many essential steps we're taking to make that vision a reality for millions."

The Jefferson Project will allow GroupWise users to leverage the powerful document management features of GroupWise to publish documents to the Web as easily as assigning user access to documents within GroupWise. Documents will reside in the GroupWise library and will be dynamically published to the Web by a server process whenever they are requested by a user, via a search or a specific URL. Any changes the author/creator makes either to the content or the access privileges of the document will be automatically reflected on the Web.

Users looking for specific information on the corporate intranet will be able to search specific GroupWise libraries, and will receive full-text indexes of specific documents rather than hundreds of difficult-to-decipher URLs.

By eliminating the need to update documents and links on the corporate Web site, Novell's Web document management technology will simplify the administrator's job. When documents are updated in GroupWise, they are updated on the Web. GroupWise will automatically publish specified documents to the corporate intranet or the Web, enabling administrators to spend more time implementing mission-critical intranet applications and less time translating documents into HTML or writing CGI scripts. In addition, the Jefferson Project technology will provide GroupWise administrators with a familiar GroupWise interface for managing information on the Web. GroupWise document management for corporate intranets and the Web will be available in early 1997 and will be integrated into the core GroupWise system.

GroupWise 5, Novell's premier Intranet application, is an extended E-mail system that is the first in the industry to include full document and image management capabilities as part of a new Universal Mail Box. GroupWise 5 helps companies leverage their corporate network investments by providing an instant collaborative solution for the corporate intranet. Building on its predecessor, GroupWise 4.1, GroupWise 5 seamlessly integrates calendaring, scheduling, task management, shared folders, conferencing, workflow and Internet access into the Universal Mail box.
