Novell Announces DeveloperNet '97 Conference
First Annual Developer Conference Focuses on
Directory-Enabled Solutions
NetWorld+Interop, ATLANTA -- September 17, 1996 --
Novell, Inc. today announced its first annual developer conference,
DeveloperNet '97, which will be held December 3-5, 1996, at the
Walt Disney World Dolphin Hotel in Orlando, Florida. DeveloperNet '97
delivers on Novell's efforts to implement and exploit new client/network
capabilities for Internet/intranet applications. By extending the core
network operating system to be a high-performance application server
and closely integrating client and developer tools, Novell's
IntranetWare has evolved into the most powerful development
platform for deploying Internet/intranet solutions.
The three-day conference, based on Novell's developer initiative,
code-named Net2000, will open new doors to develop on IntranetWare
and its network services. Developers will gain the ability to build
cross-platform, directory-enabled Internet/intranet applications faster and
easier than ever before. These applications can be accessed from
anywhere and are centrally managed and maintained through Novell
Directory Services (NDS). NDS, Novell's X.500-based
directory service, is a core component of IntranetWare and
NetWare® 4 and will soon be available for other environments
including UNIX and Windows NT.
DeveloperNet '97 is intended for hardware and software developers,
programmers, chief information officers, chief technology officers and
other strategic decision makers. The December conference will deliver
in-depth technical sessions on Novell's leading networking services and
a wide range of interfaces and standard tools for developing
Internet/intranet applications based on those services. DeveloperNet '97
will also feature a Partner Pavilion where more than 80 of the leading
Internet/intranet companies will be on hand to demonstrate their
applications, tools and services.
"The demand for Internet/intranet products will continue to grow. That
momentum, combined with Novell's installed base of 60 million users,
presents a tremendous technology and business opportunity for
developers," said Gary Mueller, vice president and general manager of
Novell's Developer Services Division. "In addition, we're embracing
industry standards and open interfaces through the Net2000 Initiative
and NDS, resolving issues of interoperability and proprietary systems
that have hampered developers in the past."
Net2000 Initiative
Net2000 eases IntranetWare development and exposes network
services to all developers by providing:
- Options for different development needs with Java, Scripting, RAD
components and C/C++;
- Easier access to IntranetWare services such as NDS, file and print,
security and licensing through standard interfaces such as Visual Basic,
Delphi and SunSoft's JavaWorkshop;
- Management and sharing of components (OCX controls and soon
Java applets) across the network using NDS; and
- Full Basic scripting capabilities to offer developers an easy way to
build IntranetWare applications and utilities.
Additional information about Net2000 is available on the Internet at http://developer.novell.com/net2000.
Java-Based Business Applications for the Internet and
Intranets
Net2000 also enables developers to build Java-based business
applications for the Internet and intranets. "Java is the universal
software platform ideally suited for directory-enabled applications. By
incorporating the Java Virtual Machine (VM) into the IntranetWare
operating system, Sun Microsystems and Novell have linked the most
portable Internet platform with the most powerful networking platform,"
said Lew Tucker, senior director of ISV Developer Relations at JavaSoft.
"JavaSoft is very excited to be a part of Novell's DeveloperNet '97
Conference. Attendees will have first access to Novell's strategic
information and technology for building a new class of business
solutions for the Internet/intranet markets."
Novell will also release its IntranetWare Software Development Kit (SDK)
for the Java Platform at the conference.
Conference Agenda
DeveloperNet '97 conference tracks are designed to deliver the Net2000
Initiative, a complete set of options for developing directory-enabled
solutions for the Internet/intranet. Net2000 offers developers freedom
and flexibility, whether they develop applications in C/C++, write scripts
to perform simple administrative tasks, use components within popular
Rapid Application Development (RAD) environments or develop
Internet/intranet business applications in Java. Additional conference
tracks will include:
- Building Java-based Applications for the
Internet/Intranet -- Attendees will learn how to build a new
class of business solutions for the Internet/intranet with the IntranetWare
Software Development Kit (SDK) for Java;
- Management of Applications Across Networks with
Directory-enabled Services -- Attendees will become familiar
with common administration, software distribution, access control and
maintenance of applications across networks using directory-enabled
services;
- Building Directory-Enabled Applications --
Attendees will learn the value of directory-enabled applications and why
they are important for the future of Internet/intranet computing, and they
will see examples of applications that demonstrate directory-enabled
computing;
- Directory-Enabled Computing Using Standards --
Attendees will become familiar with directory interoperability issues,
directory interfaces (LDAP, etc.) and choosing the appropriate directory
access protocol for their needs; and
- Component Management Service -- Attendees will
learn about the next critical service for distributed computing across the
Internet and intranets and directory-enabled applications integrated with
ORB technologies and standard desktop object services (OLE).
The conference will also feature keynote addresses from Novell and
third-party industry leaders.
