New Capabilities in Novell IntranetWare Connect Businesses to the
Internet, Intranets
Novell IntranetWare Internet Access Services Enables Users to
Manage Internet/Intranet Access Through Novell Directory
Services
NETWORLD+INTEROP, ATLANTA -- September 17, 1996
-- Novell, Inc. today announced that its upcoming
IntranetWare product will integrate new capabilities to seamlessly
link customer networks to the Internet and corporate intranets.
IntranetWare includes a complete set of Internet access services and
capabilities that ship with Novell's IntranetWare solution on October 7,
1996.
IntranetWare's Internet access services include IPX/Internet
Protocol (IP) gateway that enables customers to add Internet/intranet
access to their existing Novell networks without replacing the IPX
support that exists on many desktops, preserving customers' current
networking environment.
The Internet access support also includes full Wide Area Routing
capabilities and adds solutions such as TCP/IP with dynamic host
configuration protocol (DHCP) support and FTP (file transfer protocol)
services to IntranetWare. IntranetWare's Internet access capability
enables customers to choose either IPX, IP or a mix of these protocols
for their Internet access foundation. Because server-based gateways
and routers handle all protocol translation, users can eliminate the
expense and complexity of installing and maintaining IP on each desktop
or separate routers and hardware from multiple vendors. The Internet
access components also provides centralized administration through
integration with Novell Directory Services (NDS), Novell's
industry-leading global directory, to reduce the cost and complexity of
network administration and provide a high level of security and Internet
access control.
UUNET Technologies' nationwide network and complete range of Internet
services offer IntranetWare customers a full spectrum of Internet
connectivity solutions. "Novell's IntranetWare allows a whole new class
of customers to take advantage of the Internet," said Alan Taffel, vice
president of sales and marketing for UUNET Technologies. "IntranetWare
simplifies connecting to our network by providing a complete solution
which eliminates the need for costly additional equipment, such as
routers and IPX gateways." UUNET's offerings combined with
IntranetWare enables customers to build wide area intranets and to
access the Internet.
IntranetWare brings together all the elements necessary to link Novell
networks to the Internet and/or a private intranet:
- IPX/IP gateway, to allow IPX local area network users to see and
access IP resources;
- World Wide Web browser, from Netscape; and
- Wide-area router, for branch office and Internet service provider
connectivity eliminating the need for an external router.
"Novell is the platform of choice for Internet/intranet integration," said
Denice Gibson, senior vice president and general manager of Novell's
Distributed Networks Business Unit. "With the Internet access services in
IntranetWare, Novell gives its users an enduring competitive edge by
extending their existing networks to the Internet/intranet world. Access
is completely integrated with NDS, which reduces the cost of
Internet/intranet administration by providing centralized user access
control. Further, it gives users the flexibility to choose when and how to
migrate from IPX to IP."
"The Internet access capabilities of IntranetWare enable our customers
to securely incorporate the Internet into their existing Novell network
infrastructure," said Jim Christopherson, systems engineer, Integrated
Business Systems. "The IPX gateway works now, without the additional
requirement to configure and install an IP stack. IP can be a gradual
migration, rather than an immediate reconfiguration of your network."
Simplified Administration of Internet Users
The Internet access services in IntranetWare greatly simplifies
Internet/intranet access and administration in Novell environments. It
enables users to access the Web and corporate intranets, and use
Telnet, FTP or other IP-based services. To access the Internet, users
simply launch the Netscape Navigator browser (or other WinSock
1.1-compliant application) at their IPX workstation and let Novell Client
32 desktops pass the Internet traffic to the server's gateway for
protocol translation from IPX to IP. Administrators have traditionally had to
install and maintain a separate IP stack on each desktop to provide
NetWare clients with access to IP-based Internet/ intranet services.
Because IP is only deployed on the IntranetWare server, not on each
workstation, administrators need to track and maintain only one IP
address per group of users.
Secure Access to Internet/Intranet Resources
When using IntranetWare to access the Internet users gain a natural
firewall because only the server has an IP address, rendering IPX-based
servers and workstations invisible to potential intruders from the Internet.
It provides secure Internet access through both packet-level and
user-level control over Internet/intranet traffic. Packet filtering enables
the administrator to restrict both inbound and outbound access to
specific Internet sites and services. An administrator could block traffic
to the domain name "games.com," for example, or allow users access to
FTP services, but restrict access to the Web. IntranetWare is the first
Internet access solution that supports user- and group-level security tied
to NDS. Users' Internet rights are appended to their network rights and
managed centrally in the directory. Access control security enables
administrators to manage, limit or block connections to specific Internet
services and sites for individual users or groups of users through NDS'
graphical administration utility, NetWare® Administrator
(NWAdmin).
Create Wide Area Intranets
IntranetWare incorporates all of the functionality necessary to help
organizations build flexible, cost-effective intranet and Internet access
solutions. IntranetWare also features integrated wide area networking
capabilities to support a high speed wide area network connection to an
Internet service provider or a corporate intranet without requiring an
external router, enabling companies to minimize their network
implementation and management expenses. The routing software
technology of IntranetWare provides wide area networking over ISDN
lines, leased lines, frame relay and even ATM links, maximizing
organizations' investment in their existing hardware and infrastructure.
IntranetWare not only provides users with the wide area network and
gateway capabilities to access the Internet, but also works with other
Novell Internet solutions such as InnerWeb Publisher, NetWare
Web Server 2.5,the LAN WorkPlace product family and its
DHCP and domain name service (DNS) technologies. IntranetWare's
Internet access services greatly simplify the process of deploying an
intranet Web server by eliminating the need to retrofit an organization's
local area network with IP addresses.
Pricing and Availability
IntranetWare will be shipping on October 7, 1996 in configurations
designed for networks of all sizes. Pricing for the solution has been
provided in a companion press release. IntranetWare will be offered at
the same price as currently shipping NetWare 4.1.
