Novell Extends Its NEST Product Offerings to Include Office-Specific Software Development Kit

Novell Teams with Auco for Development of New Technology

NETWORLD+INTEROP, ATLANTA -- September 17, 1996 -- Novell, Inc. today announced the NEST™ Office Software Development Kit (SDK) v1.0, a tightly integrated, turn-key development kit created for hard-copy output device manufacturers, allowing them to build more embedded network functionality into their products. The NEST Office SDK is also a cost-effective solution enabling original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to deliver intelligent printing devices that can log onto and authenticate to Novell® NetWare® and IntranetWare™ business networks and intranets, minimizing the complexity of connecting a printer device to a network. Additionally, because the NEST Office SDK allows for network functionality to be embedded into printing devices, users benefit from increased memory on their workstations and network servers.

Additional manufacturers' advantages include:

  • Cost-effective pricing -- the Office SDK costs only U.S. $5,000
  • Rapid time-to-market -- OEM's development cycle for the Office SDK will take weeks as opposed to months
  • Reduced memory -- the new Office SDK will require approximately 50 percent less Read-Only Memory
Novell teamed with Auco, Inc., an office automation embedded systems software developer, to deliver these advantages based on feedback from original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) of hard-copy output products.

By embedding the NEST Office SDK into printing devices, manufacturers provide users with access to the latest in Novell NetWare and IntranetWare functionality and to Novell Directory Services™ (NDS™), the industry-leading global directory for business networks, corporate intranets and the Internet. NDS helps provide business users with an enduring competitive edge by speeding network management and simplifying access to network information and resources.

"The development of the NEST Office SDK v1.0 brings us one step closer to our goal -- making NEST integration easier and faster for hardware manufacturers and extending the corporate network and intranet to include additional useful devices," said John Harris, director of office automation for Novell's Extended Networks Division. "NEST's success is evident -- currently, over 200 NEST-enabled products are in development and Novell expects more than one million NEST-enabled devices to be in use by the end of 1996."

By working with Auco to develop the NEST Office SDK, Novell delivers a valuable business solution to manufacturers with advantages such as lower pricing and rapid product implementation.

"Auco realizes NEST is an ideal technology to bring the power of NetWare, IntranetWare and NDS to printers," said Howard Sidorsky, vice president of sales and marketing at Auco. "We have worked closely with NEST office equipment OEMs since the release of the NEST Client SDK. It seemed a natural next step for Auco to work with Novell to produce a new NEST Office SDK that delivers an office-specific solution to OEMs. Utilizing NEST technology, we will continue to produce innovative products to network intelligent devices."

About NEST

NEST was developed to facilitate the connection of intelligent devices in networked environments. Using NEST, OEMs can incorporate Novell NetWare and IntranetWare technology into products such as copiers, fax machines, multi-function products, printers and scanners. These devices are then able to participate in Novell business networks and intranets, enabling OEMs to leverage Novell NetWare's installed base of more than 55 million users.

Additional NEST product offerings include:

  • NEST Autoroute™ -- a routing technology for fax services
  • NEST Client SDK v1.2 -- a general purpose SDK
  • NEST Server SDK 1.0 -- An embedded server SDK for networked storage devices

Pricing and Availability

The new NEST Office SDK will be available to OEMs in early 1997. Pricing for the NEST Office SDK v1.0 is U.S. $5,000; additional services can be purchased separately. In the future, Novell also plans to deliver other office automation technologies. The general purpose NEST SDK v1.2, for non-specific, client embedded device development, will remain part of Novell's NEST product offerings.
