Novell Ships IntranetWare
Novell's Market-leading NetWare Platform Evolves into
Full-Service Intranet Solution
ATLANTA -- September 17, 1996 -- Novell, Inc.
announced today at Networld+Interop that IntranetWare will ship
October 7, 1996, and will retain similar pricing and license stratification
as NetWare® 4.1. Additionally, Novell introduced several
promotions to ease customer upgrades to IntranetWare, including a
limited-time free upgrade offer for NetWare 4.1 customers. IntranetWare
evolves NetWare, the world's leading network operating system (NOS),
into a full-service intranet and Internet access platform solution for
businesses of all sizes. Currently in manufacturing, IntranetWare will
enable NetWare customers to preserve their existing network investment
while evolving their business networks to embrace Internet technology.
IntranetWare incorporates all of NetWare 4.11's industry-leading
networking services with new intranet and Internet capabilities, creating
a comprehensive solution for building corporate intranets. These
solutions include a high-performance NetWare Web Server 2.5;
File Transfer Protocol (FTP) services, the Internet-standard method for
allowing users to download files on remote servers via the Internet;
Netscape Navigator; an IPX-to-IP gateway to provide IPX users
with access to all IP resources; and integrated wide-area routing to
connect geographically dispersed LANs to a corporate intranet or to the
Internet.
IntranetWare also allows organizations to leverage their existing
hardware and software investments as they integrate Internet
technologies into their network at their own pace, eliminating the need to
"rip and replace" in order to become Internet/intranet-enabled. Because
IntranetWare fully embraces all open standards, including the TCP/IP
protocol, it also provides users with seamless connectivity to Web
servers and browsers, as well as complete access to HTTP and HTML
files. IntranetWare is a comprehensive solution that offers organizations
the technologies they need to evolve their existing networks into
corporate intranets, while continuing to provide the networking services
they have always relied on.
"IntranetWare opens our full complement of business-tested network
services to the intranet environment," said Joe Marengi, president of
Novell. "This new solution represents a major shift for us towards a
services-based business featuring IntranetWare, Novell's intranet
platform and the future of Novell. With offerings like IntranetWare, we're
delivering broad-based solutions that our customers want and need to
carry their businesses into the next century."
"With IntranetWare, Novell is providing organizations with the best
solution available to move to the Internet faster and develop corporate
intranets more easily," said Denice Y. Gibson, senior vice president and
general manager of the Distributed Networks Business Unit at Novell.
"IntranetWare allows all of our over 55 million customers to enhance their
existing NetWare networks with new Internet/intranet solutions while
providing new users with a turn-key solution for building intranets."
"I'm very impressed with IntranetWare and its integration of NetWare with
standards-based Internet and intranet technologies to create a complete
Internet/intranet solution," said Carl V. Carr, Jr., technical support
manager at Holman's of Nevada. "And because it's fully compatible with
my existing NetWare servers, I'll be able to incorporate IntranetWare into
my corporate network smoothly and seamlessly."
IntranetWare Launch Event
These announcements, made at Novell's IntranetWare launch event at
the historic Fox Theater in Atlanta, showcased network solutions using
Novell software to demonstrate how day-to-day business activities are
enabled by IntranetWare. The event's theme, "Look What You've Got,"
was captured in the opening act by the "Rhythmics," a group that utilizes
materials found in their surroundings to create compelling music. The
"Look What You've Got" theme was carried through the event
presentations, with Novell executives, including Gibson, providing
examples of how existing investments in Novell technology enable
organizations to create, administer and evolve intranets and Internet
solutions. Partner presentations from Netscape, Oracle and UUNet
demonstrated strong partner support for IntranetWare, underscoring
Novell's commitment to the intranet market.
