Novell Offers Early Access to Advanced Network Technology
Public Given First Look at Java on IntranetWare, Novell
Replication Services, NDPS, ATM LAN Emulation and the next phase of
TCP/IP on IntranetWare
ATLANTA -- September 17, 1996 -- Today at
Networld+Interop '96 Atlanta, Novell delivered on its promise to provide
users, developers and channel partners access to new technologies in
their early stages of development. Novell® will distributed to 5,000
show attendees its first early access release CD containing
IntranetWare support of Java, Novell Replication Services, Novell
Distributed Print Services (NDPS), ATM LAN emulation and the next
phase of TCP/IP deployment on IntranetWare.
As part of its early access efforts, Novell will release periodically
updates of newly developed technologies to demonstrate technical
direction, demonstrate early developer interfaces and provide third
parties a means to participate in early technology development cycles.
The early access release CDs will ship in October as part of the Novell
Software Connection Library which currently includes more than
20,000 channel partners, resellers, developers and customers.
"I've participated in many beta programs in the past and they have been
very helpful in evaluating and planning for new products," said Dan
Blevins, technical analyst at Hallmark Cards Inc. "Getting a first look at
technologies when they are still in early development stages makes
planning much easier and helps me understand Novell's technical
directions."
"Earlier this year, Novell committed to users and partners that they would
have earlier access and more input on our developing technologies--we
are doing that today," said Denice Gibson, senior vice president and
general manager of Novell's Distributed Networking Division. "Novell is
also committed to providing both new products and product updates on
shorter time tables. Customer feedback on both our early access
technologies and our accelerated development cycles is critical."
Novell stresses that all the new technologies are intended for
informational purposes only and are in various stages of completion.
Each of the technologies must be installed and run separately in
environments that are isolated from production networks as most of the
components have not been tested for compatibility.
The early access CD includes a copy of IntranetWare beta (v.814) as the
server platform for installing and operating the early access components.
The early access CD includes the following new technologies:
Java Application Environment for IntranetWare
--Pre-Alpha
The Java Application Environment for the IntranetWare server includes
the Java Virtual Machine and Java Class Libraries. Together, these
pieces allow applications written using the Java programming language
to run on IntranetWare servers. This implementation is based on version
1.02 of the Java application environment from JavaSoft. Also included in
this release is a graphical user environment for the IntranetWare server
which supports the full range of functionality available to Java
programmers.
Novell Replication Services--Beta
As organizations build intranets, the need to replicate information from
geographically separated IntranetWare servers becomes critical. Novell
Replication Services delivers an effective way to distribute and manage
shared information across a network. Novell Replication Services
enables network administrators to selectively replicate both whole
directories and individual files from one server to any number of other
servers. Replica servers can also act as a master to its own set of
replica servers.
Replication of files such as documents, graphic images, audio and video
clips and HTML files and system files such as applications, tools and
client or server operating system files is supported. The new technology
also includes a "snap-in" to NWAdmin, IntranetWare's directory-based
management utility, that provides both replication management and
synchronization scheduling.
NDPS--Pre-Alpha
NDPS is a completely new distributed, client-server, architecture for
sharing networked peripherals. This new service takes advantage of
Novell Directory Services (NDS) to provide easier access to printers and
simpler management of printers and print services on the network.
For original equipment manufacturers, independent software vendors
and value-added resellers, NDPS provides a consistent set of network
APIs so they can more easily develop the printers and print services their
customers need.
ATM LAN Emulation--Pre-Alpha
Novell's ATM LAN Emulation software provides significant performance
and speed improvements over legacy Ethernet and token ring networks.
Using the new technology organizations can build virtual LANs for
groups of users in geographically separated locations. Additionally,
Novell's ATM LAN Emulation preserves a customer's existing investment
by allowing users to take advantage of ATM's higher bandwidth without
having to modify their existing applications.
Compliant with signaling and LAN Emulation standards set by the ATM
Forum, Novell ATM LAN Emulation allows existing IntranetWare LAN
infrastructures to take advantage of ATM switched virtual circuits for
DOS/Win 3.1 and Windows 95 workstations. Additionally, LAN Emulation
offers increased performance by supporting higher speed connectivity
to the desktop at ATM speeds up to 155 Mbps.
The next phase of TCP/IP on IntranetWare--Pre-Alpha
Novell has been shipping a TCP/IP solution with its network operating
systems since the introduction of NetWare 3 and today seamlessly
integrates IntranetWare into TCP/IP networks. The IP implementation
included in this early access release goes a step further by interfacing IP
directly to the NetWare Core Protocol (NCP).
Novell is also implementing the WinSock 2 interface on the IntranetWare
platform to provide developers with an improved interface to those
transport services. This will allow developers to access IPX, IP v4
or IP v6 transports through a single interface.
