FUJITSU CUSTOMIZES NOVELL'S GROUPWISE 5 FOR JAPANESE MARKET
Productivity Enhancements Designed to Meet Specific Needs of Enterprise
Customers
TOKYO-September 12, 1996- Novell and Fujitsu Limited today announced that it
will customize GroupWise 5, Novell's premier intranet application, for its large customers in the
Japanese market. The agreement will bring the advanced, client/server E-mail capabilities of
GroupWise 5 to Fujitsu's enterprise customers, while providing specific functionality to meet their
specialized business needs. The company also plans to bundle GroupWise 5 with its Intel-based
FM and World Wide Web servers.
Fujitsu will incorporate specific capabilities requested by its major Japanese customers into the
enhanced feature set of GroupWise 5. These capabilities will include the ability to share team
calendars and schedules, a bulletin board feature, integration with popular Japanese desktop
productivity tools, such as Microsoft Office and the Oasys word processing package, and shared
resource management capabilities.
"By itself, GroupWise 5 offers our customers the most advanced E-mail and groupware
capabilities available today. GroupWise's support for third party development allows us to take
that advanced functionality one-step further to provide a perfect fit for each customer's business
needs," said Isao Katayanagi, Director of Fujitsu Limited. "Given GroupWise's open API and
strong development tools and support, we can easily customize GroupWise 5 for our customers."
As Novell's leading OEM partner for NetWare in Japan, Fujitsu is currently targeting its largest
corporate customers, with 400 to 600 NetWare servers (20,000 to 30,000 users) with its
customized GroupWise 5 solution. Fujitsu's large customer base and leadership position in Japan's
information technology industry will allow it to play a key role in that country's emerging
GroupWare market.
"As a leader in the Japanese mainframe and personal computer markets, Fujitsu has a longstanding
reputation of providing powerful, reliable business solutions," said Stewart Nelson, vice president
and general manager of Novell's GroupWare Division. "Together with Fujitsu's leadership
position, GroupWise 5 will become an even more important foundation for building corporate
intranets and meeting other critical communication needs ."
Using the GroupWise 5 Software Developer's Kit (SDK), Fujitsu will leverage GroupWise's
support for industry standards (MAPI, ODMA, CMC/CSA and SNMP) and development
languages (VisualBasic, Delphi and C/C++) to continue to meet the specialized needs of its
customers.
