Novell's LAN WorkPlace Pro International Version Now Available

Localized software for Dutch, French, German, Italian and Spanish language users

OREM, Utah -- October 1, 1996 -- Novell today announced the shipment of the new international version of LAN WorkPlace Pro™, its integrated TCP/IP applications suite. This new software package provides localized language versions of LAN Workplace Pro for Dutch, French, German, Italian and Spanish users. LAN Workplace Pro provides Microsoft Windows 95 and Windows NT users with cost effective desktop access to mission-critical intranets including web-based services, UNIX hosts, IBM mainframes, AS400s, and DEC and VAX mainframe systems.

LAN WorkPlace Pro, which utilizes the TCP/IP stack and dialer included in Windows 95 and NT, is designed for mixed networks that include IntranetWare™, existing NetWare® platforms, UNIX, AS400s and IBM mainframes. LAN Workplace Pro extends Novell's LAN WorkPlace product line, which already includes products for DOS and Windows 3.x and has an installed base of more than 3.5 million. The new international version extends the product line as a step further to include worldwide distribution.

"Making LAN Workplace Pro available internationally strengthens Novell's commitment to providing users worldwide with a complete intranet solution," said Tamara Baker, vice president and general manager of Novell's Internet Commerce Division. "This integrated connectivity suite will continue to help users to easily access information systems and applications on their existing networks, intranets and the Internet."

Major Features and Benefits

LAN WorkPlace Pro significantly extends the TCP/IP-application functionality available in Windows 95 and NT operating systems. Specifically, it includes several features such as:

  • Internet Access -- Users can gain immediate access to World Wide Web sites, mail servers and news groups. LAN WorkPlace Pro includes version 2.01 of the Netscape Navigator™ Internet client, the latest version of the industry-leading Web browser that supports new Internet technologies including Java, JavaScript and Inline Plug-Ins. Additionally, an enhanced mailer includes automatic viewing and support for MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) attachments, providing improved document transmission and compatibility.
  • Terminal Emulation -- The terminal emulators (Telnet Presenter, TN3270, TN5250 and a VT420 emulator) give users enterprise connectivity to IBM, DEC and UNIX®-based workstations, servers and mainframes.
  • X-Server -- Users can gain access to remote X Windows applications and files on UNIX systems. The X-Server enables users to run X™ applications concurrently with their Windows programs on the same PC. The X-Server now supports the latest X11R6 standards and is X/Open® certified, assuring compatibility with future as well as present X applications.
  • File and Print Services -- LAN WorkPlace Pro includes a Network File System (NFS) client, a Rapid FTP (File Transport Protocol) and other client and server applications that enable users to share network file servers and printers.
  • Improved Installation and Simplified Administration -- LAN WorkPlace Pro integrates and extends the features available in Novell's LAN WorkPlace 5 and LAN WorkGroup 5 products, thereby providing centralized installation, workstation configuration and maintenance. A Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server centrally assigns IP addresses. Additionally, an improved installation program allows the user to install the product quickly and easily on the desktop or server.
  • Network Utilities -- Network tools such as finger demon, ping and remote shell extend the power of 32-bit network computing to standard network utilities.

Pricing and Availability

LAN WorkPlace Pro is now available for the suggested single-user retail price of $249. Multi-user licenses are also available for 10, 50, 100 and 250 users, with prices as low as $40 per user.
