Novell To Deliver Replication Services For IntranetWare and
NetWare 4
Novell Delivering Beta of First Distributed Network Replication
Services
OREM, Utah -- October 1, 1996 -- Novell, Inc. today
announced Novell Replication Services, the industry's first
dedicated tool for replicating, distributing and synchronizing information
across a network of geographically dispersed servers. Now in beta,
Novell Replication Services allows network administrators to improve
consistency and availability of data across wide area networks (WANs)
and intranet Web servers. With Novell Replication Services, businesses
can meet their mission-critical needs to implement cost-effective
corporate intranets and provide users with immediate access to the most
up-to-date network information.
Leveraging capabilities in Novell Directory Services (NDS),
Novell's industry-leading global directory service, Novell Replication
Services helps organizations manage their information and distribute it
throughout enterprise networks and corporate intranets. Novell
Replication Services provides organizations with the ability to distribute
files, including Windows documents, HTML files, software updates and
utilities, graphic images and audio and video clips. Novell Replication
Services allows network administrators to selectively replicate groups of
files from an IntranetWare, NetWare® 4 or NetWare Web
Server 2.5 to any number of other servers in the same NDS tree.
Novell Replication Services is easy to install and manage as a single
NetWare Loadable Module (NLM) administered through a
"snap-in" enhancement to the NetWare Administrator
(NWAdmin) tool.
"As the first company to offer true distributed network replication
services, Novell has reinforced its direction in providing essential tools
for managing and building corporate intranets," said Marc Epstein, vice
president and general manager of the Network Services Division at
Novell. "Novell Replication Services will also be available for UNIX and
Windows NT environments in the future, meeting customers' requests for
Novell's industry-leading network services across multiple platforms."
Benefits of Novell Replication Services
Novell Replication Services enables organizations to improve user
access to information across corporate intranets, and significantly
reduce the cost of network administration by automating replication
processes, allowing companies to make more productive use of both
network administrators and expensive WAN links.
As corporate intranets continue to grow in popularity, businesses have
developed a critical need to relieve the loads on their network servers,
improve access to information and help their employees effectively
collaborate on projects. By allowing easy replication of intranet servers,
Novell Replication Services ensures that information is consistent among
multiple Web servers while providing improved remote access.
Replicating Web sites across intranet servers locally or remotely also
helps in network and server load balancing.
With Novell Replication Services, network administrators can easily
provide consistent and immediate software updates and utilities across
networks, ensuring that employees always have the latest tools
necessary to improve productivity and efficiency, while reducing costs
related to administering these updates.
The powerful synchronization capabilities in Novell Replication Services
eliminate the need for network administrators to spend time searching
and tracking updated files for replication and writing batch files or
scripts. Thus, Novell Replication Services offers an innovative and
cost-effective tool for easy bi-directional replication and synchronization
of data across enterprise networks. Novell Replication Services detects
changes made in any of the directories and automatically replicates only
changed files, creating a fully synchronized file and data image at each
designated server. With powerful scheduling capabilities, replica
synchronization can be scheduled for as often as every minute to
ensure real time consistency throughout the network or during off-peak
hours for better management of network resources. This creates a
highly scalable replication architecture that gives network users uniform
access to network data regardless of their location.
Because information can be replicated to remote locations, information is
closer to end users, freeing WAN bandwidth for other critical
applications and minimizing reliance on WAN links. With access to
important information available at local area network (LAN) speeds,
users can more effectively collaborate, using the most recent sales
figures, business plans, company information and documentation, as
well as engineering documents and software and code changes. Thus,
Novell Replication Services reduces WAN traffic and allows better
utilization of existing equipment, telephone lines and network connections
so that organizations can more effectively leverage their existing
network and WAN capacity.
"Novell Replication Services is an important product that will allow us to
significantly improve consistency of information throughout our network,"
said Stephen Pierleoni, network administrator at KPMG. "Early in-house
beta testing has proven that Novell Replication Services promises to be a
reliable and powerful tool for replicating software, address books and
files. It will provide unprecedented ease of use when distributing critical
information to our branch offices throughout southern England."
Pricing and Availability
Novell Replication Services will be available during the first half of 1997
as a stand alone add-on for NetWare 4 and IntranetWare. The beta of
Novell Replication Services is currently available on Novell's early access
CD. Pricing is not yet available.
