GroupWise 5 Available Worldwide

Novell Continues Launch Momentum, Prepares Channel for Product Demand

OREM, Utah -- October 15, 1996 -- Novell, Inc. today announced the worldwide availability of GroupWise 5, the company's premier intranet application. Novell officially launched GroupWise 5 at a milestone launch event last month in New York City, coinciding with the product's release to manufacturing. Novell shipped GroupWise 5 to its worldwide distribution channels last week.

"GroupWise 5 is by far the best groupware product on the market today," said Randall Bennett, president of R.W. Bennett Corp., an authorized Novell Platinum Reseller. "Novell has delivered on its promise of providing a superior cross-platform, full-featured intranet collaboration tool right out-of-the-box. When you look at the competition, I think the decision becomes really easy as to which product is superior both in terms of technology and real, everyday business use."

GroupWise 5 is an extended E-mail system that is the first in the industry to include full document and image management capabilities as part of a new Universal Mail Box. The Universal Mail Box gives users single-point access to personal calendaring, group scheduling, tasks, voice mail, faxes, documents, images and other message types both from the desktop and via the Internet using GroupWise WebAccess. GroupWise WebAccess allows users to access the Universal Mail Box from any HTML-compliant Internet browser.

With this version of GroupWise, Novell also is offering a Software Developers Kit and an open object API to support third-party development of complementary applications. This development support gives GroupWise the power and depth to address a very broad range of business needs. In addition, GroupWise 5 will natively support open Internet standards such as TCP/IP and SMTP/MIME, with support for IMAP, POP and LDAP due shortly.

"GroupWise 5 is a culmination of years of experience, development and cooperation with our customers and partners," said Stewart Nelson, senior vice president and general manager of Novell's GroupWare Division. "The customer demand for this product is unbelievable. The on-time delivery of GroupWise 5 is a huge step in the evolution of collaborative computing for the intranet."

To prepare its channel for the release of GroupWise 5, Novell launched an extensive campaign to educate its resellers and partners about the product and to provide local marketing tools for GroupWise 5. A 47-city worldwide tour conducted this summer provided an estimated 12,000 resellers, distributors and dealers with GroupWise 5 sales and technical training. Novell is also distributing more than 13,000 Market Builder Kits with a variety of sales and marketing tools to help the channel market GroupWise 5 locally. Novell's channel, the most extensive in the network computing industry, includes more than 150 distributors and more than 29,000 resellers worldwide.

"GroupWise used to be one of the best-kept secrets in the industry, but with the hype surrounding the launch of GroupWise 5, that's all about to change," said Roger McNamara, president of Ascent Networking, an authorized Novell Gold Reseller. "We have a lot of customers who have held off making a purchasing decision until the release of GroupWise 5, and I think they'll find it was well worth the wait. GroupWise 5 offers a rare combination of Internet support and rich functionality out of the box, with the option of full customization and development, making it an ideal solution for organizations of all sizes."
