Novell and IBM Deliver Again -- NetWare for SAA 2.2 the Leading LAN-to-Host Connectivity Solution

Complete Novell Directory Services Integration and New Intranet Capabilities Ease Network Administration and Improve User Access to Host-Based Information

OREM, Utah and RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, North Carolina -- October 30, 1996 -- Novell, Inc. and IBM® Corp. today announced NetWare® for SAA® 2.2, the latest version of the market-leading SNA gateway solution, which improves ease of use, lowers administrative costs and increases reliability. This new version features tighter integration with Novell Directory Services™ (NDS™), expanded Internet and intranet capabilities and enhanced client support.

According to a January 1996 International Data Corporation report, NetWare for SAA led the 1995 LAN-to-host gateway market, with 30.9 percent of worldwide SNA gateway shipments. Novell and IBM are committed to building on this leadership, by enabling customers to leverage and expand upon their existing technology investments. As a stand-alone server or as an addition to Novell's IntranetWare™, NetWare for SAA 2.2 integrates seamlessly with network environments, providing customers increased accessibility to information and resources residing on IBM S/390® and AS/400® systems, both of which are important components of corporate networking solutions.

"NetWare for SAA 2.2 ensures that Novell and IBM will maintain their position as market leaders in LAN-to-host solutions," said Denice Gibson, senior vice president and general manager of the Distributed Networks Business Unit for Novell. "NetWare for SAA 2.2 fits strategically within the complete foundation of intranet services available on Novell's IntranetWare platform."

"NetWare for SAA 2.2 represents the second host communications product IBM and Novell have released this year, and it is clearly the premier NetWare-to-host communications solution available," said Al Zollar, general manager, IBM Networking Systems. "As customers realize the promise of network computing, NetWare for SAA 2.2 provides them with the means to easily access critical corporate data from their NetWare network."

Simplified Administration and Management

NetWare for SAA 2.2 fully exploits the unique power of NDS in order to simplify management for administrators. NDS-related enhancements eliminate the need for per-client configuration. In addition, new extensions to Novell's NetWare Administrator™ (NWAdmin™) allow administrators to manage users centrally from one console, saving a significant amount of time and administrative costs. NetWare for SAA also includes load-balancing technology to ensure equal client distribution among multiple servers. This positively affects server performance, and yields faster response time.

Simplified administration is also delivered by the SAA Services Manager (SSM). This software utility monitors NetWare for SAA gateways for user accessibility, user demand and gateway traffic. This diagnostic capability provides an element of security to administrators and reliability to end users. In addition, it serves as an effective vehicle for usage trend analysis. By monitoring usage over time, administrators can be confident that the number of licenses they purchased is consistent with the demand of their companies.

NetWare for SAA Supports Corporate Intranets

Enhancements made to NetWare for SAA 2.2 allow users to further leverage the IP support found in IntranetWare. Specific features include TN3270E support, an FTP server, FTP/AFTP gateway, Frame Relay and FDDI. TN3270E support delivers host access to users across TCP/IP connections, increasing host accessibility for the customer. The FTP server and FTP/AFTP gateway allow customers to retrieve host files from anywhere on the network, using a Web browser. NetWare for SAA 2.2 combines these technologies with Novell's IntranetWare to build a complete corporate Internet and intranet solution.

Enhanced Client Support

Working with third-party partners, Novell and IBM maintain their open platform strategy with a standard set of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). This ensures that all network users can communicate with the host, regardless of users' desktop computing choice. In addition to existing support for DOS and Windows 3.1, NetWare for SAA 2.2 provides 32-bit clients including OS/2, Windows 95 and Windows NT. NetWare for SAA 2.2 also delivers an enhanced 32-bit AS/400 router which increases performance to AS/400s.

Pricing and Availability

NetWare for SAA 2.2 utilizes concurrent user-based licensing. NetWare for SAA 2.2 licensing will be additive, allowing new licenses to be incorporated as needed, without disturbing the existing installation or having to reboot the server. Stratification for NetWare for SAA 2.2 is segmented into 10-, 50-, 250- and 500-user packages, with prices from $2,495 to $34,495 (U.S.). Upgrade pricing is also available.
