Novell to Provide Networking Infrastructure for the World Economic Forum
Internet/intranet and Messaging Capabilities Available to All Summit Attendees
GITEX Conference -- Dubai -- November 4, 1996 -- Novell, Inc. today
announced an agreement with the World Economic Forum to provide the electronic
communication infrastructure for its annual meeting and regional summits over the next three
years. The Annual Meeting in Davos of the World Economic Forum is considered to be the most
important meeting of leaders from business, government and academia worldwide.
Novell will provide the intranet infrastructure and support for World Economic Forum summits.
This includes the network operating system software, network management, mobile technology,
messaging tools, and Internet tools. Novell will also provide technical personnel and resources to
install and support the systems and to provide training for the conference personnel.
The pilot of the Novell project was launched at the last regional conference in Salzburg, Austria.
The next regional economic summit will be held in Cairo, Egypt, November 12-14, 1996. The
Annual Meeting will be held in Davos, Switzerland, January 30-February 4, 1997.
Customized Intranet
There will be approximately 25 desktop computers in the main conference area to enable
participants to exchange messages. Additionally, the World Economic Forum database has been
integrated into the intranet to allow participants to search for personal or company profiles. The
registration will also be handled through this network.
The messaging system is based on Novell's IntranetWare and GroupWise products, plus a
customised application, based on GroupWise, exclusively developed by Novell for the World
Economic Forum. IntranetWare is Novell's new product that continues the evolution of NetWare,
the world's leading network operating system, into a full-service intranet and Internet access
platform. GroupWise is an extended client/server E-mail system and is Novell's premier intranet
application. "We are pleased that our cooperation with Novell made it possible to provide such a
value-added service to participants at the first Central and Eastern Economic Summit in Salzburg
in July. Participants were able to contact each other via the electronic message system and at
Novell's Cyber Lounge, to go on-line with the Internet," said Klaus Schwab, Founder and
President of the World Economic Forum.
Experience Electronic Communication
In addition to implementing the networking infrastructure for the event, Novell will also install the
Novell Cyber Lounge at each conference. This lounge will be a meeting point and communication
platform for the participants. It will offer the opportunity for in-depth information about modern
Internet and intranet technologies that can then be put into practice at 15 Internet connecting
points installed in the lounge.
Using Novell's IntranetWare and Novell Web Server, the Cyber Lounge at the Cairo regional
summit will be connected to the worldwide Internet using the latest advanced satellite
technologies. There will be a direct satellite link between the Cairo International Convention
Centre and Novell s office in Dusseldorf, Germany, and from there a connection right into the
Internet. Through this connection, every participant will be able to collect business information
available from news agencies around the world such as CNN, Reuters, and the Associated Press.
Continuous updates on stocks from the New York Stock Exchange will also be provided to the
attendees.
