Novell Expands DeveloperNet Subscription Program

DeveloperNet Offers Free On-line Access Plus New Features to Paid Subscribers

OREM, Utah -- November 5, 1996 -- Novell, Inc. today announced the expansion of its DeveloperNet™ program to include a new, no-cost Electronic service and significant additions to its current Base and Advanced subscription options. The Electronic subscription offers free, on-line access to Novell's Software Development Kits (SDKs) and tools and interfaces from Novell's developer initiative, DeveloperNet 2000™, formerly called Net2000. Enhancements to the Base and Advanced options include Novell's full suite of software for development purposes as well as additional research and technical information.

Expansion of the DeveloperNet Program significantly reduces development time and cost for a broader segment of developers and provides added tools, training and support to develop intranet-ready solutions. This expansion demonstrates Novell's commitment to providing software programmers and hardware manufacturers with the optimal development environment for leveraging the market demand generated by the more than 55 million Novell customers.

"With the dramatic increase of intranet and Internet computing, Novell has seen an increased demand for support and access to Novell Directory Services™ (NDS™) and other network services such as messaging, file and print," said Gary Mueller, vice president of Novell's Developer Services Division. "Novell is responding by offering new developer options and by simplifying development to the NetWare and IntranetWare™ platforms through our DeveloperNet 2000 Initiative."

DeveloperNet 2000 enables developers to seamlessly integrate their products and systems by easing access to NDS and other network services. DeveloperNet 2000 offers developers the freedom and flexibility to use their preferred development tools including Java, RAD Components, Scripting and C/C++. Additional information about the DeveloperNet 2000 Initiative and directory-enabled computing will be delivered at DeveloperNet '97, Novell's first industry-wide developers conference scheduled for December 3-5, 1996, at the Walt Disney World Dolphin Hotel in Orlando, Florida.

DeveloperNet Enhancements

In addition to SDKs, tools and interfaces offered to Electronic subscribers, paid subscribers of DeveloperNet's current Base and Advanced levels will also receive advanced development support including:

  • The Novell Software Connection Library (NSCL) -- a 100-user license package of the Novell family of products worth thousands of dollars, allowing developers to explore and develop to nearly all of Novell's industry-leading networking products
    • Package content: More than 75 Novell products, including shipping products and beta products; subscribers will receive additional CDs as new products become available
    • Benefits: Allows subscribers to gain market and support advantage over other developers, facilitating early development of product plans and ultimately, early shipment of third-party products to market.
  • DeveloperNet Connection -- provides the latest Novell product and program information, DeveloperNet 2000 and DeveloperNet updates, Novell in the News, DeveloperNet events and more; DeveloperNet Connections is issued electronically every other week.
  • DeveloperNet Education Computer-Based Training (CBT) CDs -- an ongoing series of multimedia self-study courses containing voice-narrated and animated lectures explaining concepts of NetWare programming
  • The Novell Research Anthology CD -- a complete collection of Novell research and technical information from 1990 to the present which developers can access on the World Wide Web. The Novell Research Anthology offers extensive search and find capabilities to ensure that developers can find answers to their technical questions quickly and easily. The Anthology CD includes the following elements:
    • Novell Application Notes (AppNotes) -- Novell's monthly technical journal for network design, implementation, administration and integration
    • NetNotes -- section of AppNotes containing technical information to help DeveloperNet subscribers work with Novell products more effectively
    • Novell Developer Notes (DevNotes) -- a monthly publication for developers of network applications
"These additions to DeveloperNet should improve the program for both large and small users," said Romi Lessig, Air Apparent business manager for Motorola's GroupWise™ pager gateway. "The Novell Software Connection Library is important to me because it will eliminate incremental budget expenditures previously needed to explore other Novell products. It will streamline the process of integration with Novell products such as GroupWise or ManageWise™.

"The Research Anthology CD is a great idea for our new engineers who need more support and information initially -- it should save us on training time," added Lessig. "Anytime you can get information in an easily searchable format it's a plus for developers. And even though we are a large company, we work with smaller systems integrators and independent software vendors who need Novell's Electronic subscription to access Novell's developer tools and components."
