Novell Delivers the Full Capabilities of IntranetWare To Windows NT Workstations
New IntranetWare Client for Windows NT Supports Snap-in Utilities for Simplified NT
Workstation Administration, Centralized Networked Application Management
OREM, Utah -- November 6, 1996 -- Novell, Inc. today announced the release
of its IntranetWare Client for Windows NT, now available for download from Novell on-line forums on CompuServe and the World Wide Web. The 32-bit IntranetWare Client for
Windows NT is the most full-featured client software available for the Windows NT desktop,
offering NT 3.51 and 4.0 workstations complete access to all IntranetWare and
NetWare® services and information, including Novell Directory Services
(NDS), to provide organizations with a seamless Internet/intranet solution. Delivery of
this latest IntranetWare client software underscores Novell's commitment to providing its
customers with the best possible access to IntranetWare services from all desktop environments.
Available with the NT Client is the updated Novell Application Launcher 1.1, a utility that
uses NDS to give users location-independent access to their applications and enables network
administrators to centralize application installation and administration. Also available for
download later this fall will be beta software for the Novell Workstation Manager, a utility that
will allow administrators to integrate NT workstations into IntranetWare environments, centrally
managing them through NDS.
"Novell is committed to extending the full features of IntranetWare across all network platforms,
including Windows NT," said William Donahoo, senior director for product marketing at Novell.
"With products like the IntranetWare Client for Windows NT, Novell Application Launcher and
the Novell Workstation Manager, Novell continues to leverage NDS to incorporate all network
users. These new products centralize NT workstation management, while providing NT
workstation users with full access to all IntranetWare services from any location."
The IntranetWare Client for Windows NT offers administrators several benefits including:
simplified setup through a fully customizable installation that is fully integrated with the Windows
NT installation process; reduced administration time and effort through the Automatic Client
Update (ACU) utility, enabling administrators to centrally update NT client software
automatically across the network; and simplified administration through a single point of
management for all information stored in NDS through the 32-bit NetWare Administrator
(NWAdmin) utility. In addition, the IntranetWare Client for Windows NT fully
synchronizes workstation and network user accounts, providing users and administrators with
single log-in access to both workstation and network resources.
"The ability to log in to NDS and NT domains at the same time is a big plus for me," said Tim
Miller, telecommunications engineer for Allied Signal. "This makes it much easier to administer,
especially when I have to change user passwords. Unlike the Microsoft client, Novell's
IntranetWare Client for Windows NT gives me the opportunity to synchronize passwords, saving
time and eliminating the troublesome process of being accidentally disconnected from the
network. I also like the remote capabilities the product gives us; we can now log in from home to
the Novell network via IP through a PPP/Internet Service Provider."
Novell Application Launcher
Included at no extra cost with the IntranetWare Client for Windows NT is the Novell Application
Launcher (NAL) 1.1, a utility to provide users with access to their networked applications
through a customizable desktop interface. Novell Application Launcher leverages NDS to provide
users with location-independent access to their applications and enables administrators to centrally
maintain and control access to server-based applications, reducing management time and expense.
A snap-in to IntranetWare's NWAdmin utility, NAL 1.1 offers users a new folder system for
organizing multiple networked resources, improved application performance with fault tolerance
and multiple server load balancing for consistent performance of networked applications.
Novell Workstation Manager
To provide even tighter integration of NT workstations into IntranetWare environments, Novell
Workstation Manager beta software is scheduled to be available later this fall. Novell Workstation
Manager is a new utility that will integrate with the IntranetWare Client for Windows NT
software to simplify user account administration by leveraging NDS, enabling administrators to
centrally manage NT workstations without requiring NT servers on the network. Novell
Workstation Manager will reduce management time and expense by enabling administrators,
through NDS, to centrally create and manage NT user accounts, while providing users with the
ability to access their familiar desktop and network resources from any location.
The 32-bit IntranetWare Client for Windows NT is the newest member of Novell's family of 32-bit client software, which includes the IntranetWare Client for DOS/Windows, the IntranetWare
Client for Windows 95 and the IntranetWare Client for Mac OS. The NT client offers users
significant benefits, including:
- Full integration with Windows NT Workstation 3.51 and 4.0;
- One-step graphical log-in with a single password to gain complete access to the workstation
and all IntranetWare services;
- Full log-in script execution, including NDS support;
- Access to IntranetWare services using TCP/IP;
- Co-existence with Microsoft peer-to-peer service, allowing user access to resources and
services on other NT servers and workstations;
- Auto-reconnection to servers, printers and other network resources in cases of network
connection disruptions; and
- Dial-in and dial-out capabilities to NetWare, IntranetWare and Windows NT servers through
RAS to provide users with full access to remote network data.
The IntranetWare Client for Windows NT also provides administrators with significant benefits,
enabling them to:
- Lower the cost and complexity of client upgrades by dynamically installing and refreshing
client software across the network with Automatic Client Update capabilities;
- Centrally manage user access to network applications through Novell Application Launcher
1.1;
- Simplify administration through easy client setup, a fully configurable installation and the
ability to centrally update clients; and
- Easily create, modify and delete NDS objects such as users, applications and networked
resources through the 32-bit NWAdmin utility.
