Novell Launches a Global Network Operations Center

New Global Network Operations Center uses ManageWise™ to improve the performance of Novell's business-critical networks and systems worldwide

OREM, Utah -- November 8, 1996 -- Novell, Inc. today announced the completion of its new Global Network Operation Center (GNOC), an internal implementation of the latest technologies in enterprise management. The GNOC gives Novell's worldwide network and systems management a central point of control to manage troubleshooting and maintenance efforts. The GNOC includes Novell's ManageWise, a leading network and systems management platform. In response to multiple customer requests, Novell Consulting now offers a service to help customers build their own GNOCs.

"By implementing this Global Network Operation Center solution we expect to reduce downtime for our business critical systems significantly" said Sheri Anderson, Novell's Chief Information Officer. "ManageWise provides us with the information we need to troubleshoot our large environment. The GNOC will improve productivity broadly at Novell, it is built around the network management capability that ManageWise and Novell Consulting can deliver to enterprise customers."

Novell's Global Network Operations Center manages over 18,000 devices in 100 cities for almost 6,000 employees worldwide. From a central location, administrators can manage any device, server, or desktop in Novell's large network. If a server or network problem arises, an alarm is triggered and the GNOC is notified. As soon as this alarm appears, a GNOC administrator uses ManageWise to drill down into the network, check out the problem, and fix it. With the GNOC in operation, Novell expects response time for internal information systems incidents to be reduced from 3.8 hours per incident to less than one hour per incident. System uptime at Novell is expected to increase to over 99.5% for the following applications:

  • Customer Support Tracking
  • GroupWise E-mail Communications
  • Production and Inventory Tracking
  • Finance and Accounting Information
  • Point of Sale Reporting
  • Human Resources Database
Novell created their GNOC in under six months and the first location was up and running within 90 days. Physical locations in California, Utah, and the Netherlands are connected via a video hallway for immediate visual and verbal communication between the people at each operation site. Novell implemented ManageWise worldwide and several third party applications were snapped into the standards-based ManageWise platform. The integration of ManageWise and the third party snap-in applications provide infrastructure, server, desktop, and application management. CNN is even cabled into the GNOC so the network administrators can monitor world events such as weather conditions or civil actions that might have an impact on Novell locations around the world.

With the GNOC, Novell executives will receive meaningful reports that track information technology system and departmental performance worldwide. In addition to reducing system downtime, the GNOC will help Novell perform capacity planning on a global basis and provides reports to local and regional administrators for proactive maintenance. Novell expects to see a payback from the GNOC investment within 12 months.

GNOC Consulting Services

Novell Consulting, a part of Novell's sales organization, now offers management consulting services to companies who want to implement their own GNOC solution and for resellers or service providers who want to build a GNOC service for their customers.

"When we show customers our Global Network Operations Center they always ask if we can build a GNOC for them, " said Bob Wise, Vice President of Novell Consulting. "So we are offering a consulting service to help customers and partners build their own Global Network Operations Centers."

Novell Consulting offers their own GNOC project experience, a proven implementation methodology, and expertise in network technology to help customers build their own GNOCs.
