Deutsche Telekom Rolls Out Market Trials of Novell Connect Services
Customers Use Novell Directory Services as Foundation for Value-added, Global
Business Networks
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- December 2, 1996 -- Novell, Inc. and Deutsche Telekom
AG have announced market trials of Deutsche Telekom IntraLink Service, an offer of Deutsche
Telekom Internet Value Added Services. This service is mainly based on Novell Connect
Services, providing customers with business-class, Internet/intranet services that are secure,
affordable, manageable, and easy to use. Several major German companies are in the pilot phase
to be the first customers of Europe's largest telecommunications provider to use Novell's business
Internet solutions. With Novell's solutions, customers will be able to extend the reach of their
traditional networks for secure, collaborative business-to-business communications. Initial phases
of the trial begin this month and commercial availability is expected during the first quarter of
1997.
In the initial phase of the service, the IntraLink Service will provide business users of Deutsche
Telekom with remote access to branch offices and corporate sites, and network-to-network
connectivity to create virtual private LANs.
"We believe the partnership with Novell will enable us to bring important Internet and private
network capabilities of the Deutsche Telekom IntraLink Service to our customers," said Guenter
Weick, head of the Multimedia Business Unit Internet Value Added Services at
Deutsche Telekom. "Novell's recognized leadership in the networking market, combined with our
ability to offer Internet value-added services, will help our customers of all sizes improve
communications not only internally, but also with their customers, suppliers, and business partners
worldwide."
Novell Connect Services enable customers to create networks that connect business sites to each
other, remote users, corporate intranets, and the Internet. Also, the service lets users outsource
the associated costs and complexity of maintaining enterprise networks, while taking full
advantage of resources on the Internet and in other online information networks.
Key to Novell Connect Services is Novell Directory Services (NDS) that provides
the foundation for value-added, global business networks. NDS is Novell's cross-platform, single
point of access and management for all network resources, regardless of platform, protocol, or
location. NDS is the industry's first-ever truly global directory service to the Internet that
increases user productivity, decreases administrative costs and makes it easier to find information
on any network.
"To remain financially healthy and competitive in this diverse global market, businesses large and
small must be able to communicate securely and access network resources seamlessly, regardless
of where they reside," said Neal Castagnoli, director of Business Internet Services at Novell.
"Novell's business Internet services and global directory services of NDS help companies maintain
a competitive edge while preserving the investments already made in their existing networks," he
said.
Growing Industry Support of Novell Solutions
Deutsche Telekom now joins AT&T and NTT in Japan as the world's third largest service
provider and the world's largest Internet service provider to deploy Novell's business-class,
Internet/intranet services. Two commercial business networks are available today from AT&T
(AT&T WorldNet Intranet Connect Service) and NTT (NTT Network Connect Services). The
three ISPs, in conjunction with Novell and other technology companies and service providers, will
demonstrate a global business network based on NDS on December 3 at the IBM Almaden
Laboratory in San Jose, CA. The demonstration will be held during a meeting of the Multimedia
Services Affiliate Forum, a group of over 40 international service providers and technology
companies working together to develop interconnected global business networks. Novell
technologies based on NDS form the basis for ensuring interoperability among member networks.
Deutsche Telekom is Europe's largest telecommunications company and the third largest carrier
worldwide. In 1995, the Deutsche Telekom group completed its most successful fiscal year yet.
Turnover rose by 3.6 percent from DM 63.8 billion in 1994 to DM 66.1 billion. Group net profit
before levy and tax increased to around DM 9 billion.
With a workforce of about 213,000 and an investment volume totaling approximately DM 135
billion since 1990, Deutsche Telekom has established a modern telecommunications infrastructure
in Germany. This effort involved a large amount of fundamental groundwork, especially in eastern
Germany. Offering a complete range of products and services, Deutsche Telekom has an
expansive TV cable network connected to over 16 million homes. As a consequence, the technical
basis for entry into the multimedia age is excellent in Germany.
Founded in 1983, Novell (NASDAQ:NOVL) is the world's leading provider of network software.
The company offers a wide range of network solutions for distributed network, Internet, intranet
and small-business markets. Novell education and technical support programs are the most
