Novell Expands Master CNE Program
Program Helps Companies Support Heterogeneous Environments
OREM, Utah -- December 3, 1996 -- Novell, Inc. today announced an
expansion of its industry-leading Master Certified Novell Engineer (Master CNE) program to
include two new education tracks that focus on maintaining and supporting Internet/intranet and
multi-platform networks. The new Internet/Intranet Solutions and Client/Network Solutions
tracks enable CNEs to leverage their existing knowledge of Novell's IntranetWare and Novell
Directory Services (NDS) to support today's global networks and multivendor, open systems
environments.
"With these new enhancements, CNEs can earn the elite Master CNE certification and specialize
in high-demand integration skills," said Gary A. Clark, director of skills assessment for Novell
Education. "By providing seamless, cross-platform IntranetWare solutions, Master CNEs will
support the most advanced and cost-effective computing environments available today."
Designed for network professionals wanting to incorporate Internet technologies with their
existing infrastructure, the Internet/Intranet Solutions track focuses on building full-service
intranets. A Master CNE certified in this track will be able to seamlessly integrate Internet/intranet
solutions with NDS. Skills include managing the IP infrastructure, building FTP services,
installing firewalls and integrating the network operating system with the Web server, FTP servers
and WAN connections to the Internet.
The Client/Network Solutions track addresses the real-world, heterogeneous environments that
CNEs are working in. The training covers the integration of other platforms with IntranetWare
and the solutions-oriented aspects of networking. The track includes three areas of specialization:
IBM AS/400, Microsoft Windows NT and Santa Cruz Operations (SCO) UNIX. This track also
allows for simultaneous AS/400 or SCO ACE certification once required examinations have been
passed. Novell plans to add vendors and platforms to this track on the basis of customer demand.
IntranetWare and UNIX Integration
The IntranetWare and UNIX Integration track was developed with the cooperation of SCO.
Training for the IntranetWare courses is available through Novell Authorized Education Centers
(NAECs) worldwide. Training for the UNIX courses is available through SCO Authorized
Education Centers.
"Integrated computing environments are more prevalent than ever," said Shamim Formoso,
director of Partner Programs at SCO. "The realities of today's networking structures require
technicians and engineers to understand the intricacies of multiple platforms and configurations.
Novell has stepped up to meet these needs by providing one of the most comprehensive
certification programs in the industry. This is a great move for SCO, Novell and the industry at
large."
IntranetWare and Windows NT Integration
Novell developed this track to satisfy the customer demand for CNEs knowledgeable in
integrating NDS with Windows NT.
"The focus of this track is integration," said Gary A. Clark, director of skills assessment for
Novell Education. "Master CNEs will learn how to integrate Windows NT servers with
IntranetWare and NDS, minimizing the administration costs of an enterprise environment and
maximizing the company's investment." Training will be available in early 1997 through NAECs
worldwide.
IntranetWare and AS/400 Integration
Novell Education and IBM cooperated to develop the IntranetWare/ AS/400 Integration track.
Training is now available through select NAECs.
"We are pleased to be working with Novell to enhance the value of network investments for a
wide range of customers," said Bill Zeitler, general manager, IBM AS/400 Division. "This
relationship represents an opportunity for two leading network solution providers to help
companies better implement more streamlined PC LAN solutions."
Other Changes
The existing Master CNE tracks have been renamed to more accurately reflect the skill sets
covered and to make it easier to add related courses. The Network Management track is now
called Management, the Infrastructure and Advanced Access track is now called Connectivity and
the GroupWare Integration track is now called Messaging.
All of the over 94,000 CNEs worldwide can immediately pursue Master CNE certification.
Previously only CNEs who had earned NetWare 3, NetWare 4 or GroupWise certification were
eligible.
