Novell Announces Final Beta of Small Business Network Solution

Code-named Kayak, Network Platform Is Easy to Install and Manage

Internet World, NEW YORK -- December 9, 1996 -- Novell, Inc. today announced final beta shipment of its networking platform, code-named Kayak, for small businesses with fewer than 25 users. Kayak, in beta since early November, delivers a network environment optimized for small businesses, offering fast and simple installation and easy administration and management. By offering a complete networking solution that is easily installed and managed, Novell is delivering on its commitment to customize its industry-leading technology for the specific needs of small businesses.

"Novell realized small companies need proven network solutions as much as large enterprises," said William Donahoo, senior director of product marketing at Novell. "While enabling small businesses to build on and increase their networking capabilities, Kayak also provides resellers and independent software vendors (ISVs) with the opportunity to grow the product, and with support and service offerings they can market to the rapidly expanding small business market."

Simple Installation and Migration

Based on fourth-generation NetWare technology, Novell's proven, robust and reliable technology for networks, Kayak is designed to specifically meet the installation, management and maintenance needs of small businesses. Kayak's Quick Start helps complete installation within 30 minutes. Auto-detection identifies hardware components and automatically configures them.

The coach-based Novell Easy Administration Tool™ (NEAT) feature enables easy network set-up by providing a simple interface for creating, deleting and modifying users, groups, applications and printers on the network. On-line documentation in HTML format allows Kayak customers to obtain documentation updates and the other current information from Novell's World Wide Web site.

The single-site directory allows Kayak customers to leverage the power of Novell Directory Services™ (NDS™) without the complexity required for larger enterprise networks. With NEAT and Novell Application Launcher™ (NAL™), users can manage and update applications from a central location saving time and money while providing users with access to consistent applications regardless of their location. Small business customers are enabled to set up, find, access and manage network resources and users easily.

Easy Communication, Collaboration and Remote Management

Kayak includes Novell's NetWare Connect™ to provide dial-in and dial-out capabilities, allowing users to connect to the network and network-based resources from any location. NetWare Connect also features modem pooling so users can share modem hardware, resulting in significant cost savings. Kayak management tools, based on the Novell ManageWise™ end-to-end network management solution, allows easy remote management for customers. Resellers can now dial into small business networks to implement ManageWise and provide network services to customers.

Kayak also includes Web Server™ 2.5 and Netscape Navigator 3.0 for access to intranet and Internet information and resources. Using Kayak, customers can create a company intranet to enhance information sharing and availability while leveraging Internet and World Wide Web technologies to expand their business opportunities. Kayak is also an ideal platform for GroupWise 5, Novell's expanded client/server E-mail system. Adding GroupWise 5 to Kayak provides small businesses with world-class communication and collaboration capabilities.

Kayak will be available to customers in the first quarter of 1997. Pricing and a comprehensive upgrade program will be announced when Kayak is made available. Additional information about Novell's small business support can be accessed on the World Wide Web at http://www.novell.com/smallbiz.
