Novell's Dr. Roger Schell Honored As Distinguished Lecturer At Twelfth Annual Computer
Security Applications Conference
What:
As part of its annual recognition of an individual's significant contributions to the computer
(information systems) security community, the Applied Computers Security Associates (ACSA) is
honoring Novell's Dr. Roger Schell as the Distinguished Lecturer at the
Twelfth Annual Computer Security Applications Conference.
Dr. Roger Schell, the senior development manager of Information Security for Novell, is
internationally recognized as a major contributor to the advancement of computer security
concepts and the overall definition of network security. He is credited with establishing a
world-class team of security engineers who have successfully developed and delivered the security
features and assurances for Novell's most recent releases of network software products, including
NetWare, IntranetWare and Novell Directory Services (NDS).
Dr. Schell is the founding deputy director of the National Computer Security Center (NCSC),
where he was a principal contributor to the security evaluation criteria (Orange Book) now used
as a recognized standard by major computer manufacturers. Later, he was a major contributor
from industry to the criteria (Red Book) for networks. In 1991, the NIST and NSA presented Dr.
Schell with the National Computer System Security Award, the nation's highest honor in the
computer security field. Dr. Schell's accomplishments and views have been recognized over the
past 25 years in numerous business publications and professional journals.
When:
In the general session on December 11, Dr. Roger Schell will deliver a presentation entitled "The
Internet Rules, but the Emperor Has No Clothes." Using an analogy from the familiar tale "The
Emperor's New Clothes," Dr. Schell will discuss how the crowning achievement in the Internet is
the complete, wide-open interconnection between information resources and end-users, but
without secure solutions, it is an unsuitable repository for valuable information.
