Novell IntranetWare to Support Compaq's Hot Plug PCI

Hardware/Software Solution to Offer Fault-Tolerance; Maximize Server Uptime

OREM, Utah -- December 11, 1996 -- Novell, Inc. today announced that it will provide full support for Compaq's upcoming Hot Plug PCI servers within IntranetWare™, Novell's full-service intranet and Internet access platform for businesses of all sizes. In 1997 Novell will deliver the first third-party software products to take advantage of the new Compaq architecture, enabling network administrators to exchange or "Hot Plug" PCI server adapters without bringing down the server.

The new Hot Plug capability is one component of Novell's strategy to provide customers with a comprehensive range of fault-tolerant solutions for managing and troubleshooting computer networks. Other Novell fault-tolerant technologies available on Novell's IntranetWare include SFT III to provide seamless hardware redundancy, and Vinca's StandbyServer for automatic recovery from both hardware and software failures.

"A Novell development team is partnering with Compaq to deliver the first network software solution that incorporates support for Hot Plug PCI," said Glenn Ricart, chief technology officer at Novell. "IntranetWare, in combination with Compaq's Hot Plug PCI servers, will provide our customers with a complete fault-tolerant network solution. Novell wholeheartedly supports technology that provides customers with more server uptime and more consistent access to networked resources."

"Novell's IntranetWare architecture is uniquely able to incorporate support for Hot Plug PCI, yielding the first standardized Hot Plug operating system solution," said Tracey Stewart, director, systems software at Compaq Computer. "We are extremely pleased that Novell is partnering with us to provide the market with a new industry-standard solution that will offer customers increased server availability for their business-critical operations."

Novell is delivering Software Developer Kits (SDKs) to its disk driver and LAN driver developers, enabling them to build applications that leverage Compaq's "Hot Plug" technology. Interested developers should contact Novell Labs at (801) 861-5544 for more information.
