Novell Announces Executive Appointments
OREM, Utah -- January 7, 1997 -- Novell, Inc. (NASDAQ: NOVL)
president Joe Marengi today appointed two direct reports to the networking leader's executive
management committee. Mardi Garren joins Novell as vice president, corporate communications
with responsibility for advertising, executive and internal communications, investor relations,
public relations, trade shows and events, and the integration of marketing teams worldwide.
Ronald E. Heinz, formerly Novell vice president Americas sales, has been named senior vice
president, worldwide sales with responsibility for Novell sales and field marketing worldwide.
Garren has over 25 years of strategic marketing experience in the computer industry, including
leadership positions in domestic and international marketing, corporate communications, and
marketing communications. She joins Novell from Garren Marketing Consulting Services, a
company she founded in 1995 to provide strategic marketing and communications consulting
services to high-tech companies. Previously, she was vice president of international marketing for
International Data Group and held senior management positions with Ziff Davis, TeleVideo,
Verbatim Corporation, and other companies.
"We are aggressively rebuilding Novell's image as the networking leader," said Marengi. "The
challenges are to present one face for Novell, and to spread the word about the advantages of our
products, our channel, and our people. Mardi Garren brings to Novell the right blend of strategic
thinking, leadership experience, and creativity to get the job done."
Heinz joined Novell in 1987 and his tenure includes sales and marketing management positions
serving both channel and end-user customers. He was Novell's vice president for sales and
marketing to major customers before joining Marengi's executive committee as vice president
Americas sales in 1996. Prior to joining Novell, he held sales and management positions with
Xerox Corporation and Dialcom, Inc.
"Ron Heinz has the winning track record and aggressive attitude we need to lead Novell's sales
teams at a time of explosive opportunity around intranets and the Internet," said Marengi. "He has
solid relationships with Novell customers and channel partners, as well as in-depth knowledge of
the networking marketplace. He's the right executive to lead both new and existing customers into
the era of intranets and the Internet."
