Novell's GroupWise Reaches Major Milestone for U.S. Defense Messaging System (DMS)
Certification
GroupWise DMS Brings Secure Messaging to the Desktop through X.400/X.500
Services
OREM, Utah -- January 28, 1997 -- Novell, Inc. today announced that
GroupWise DMS, a version of its award-winning GroupWise 5 collaboration product, has
successfully completed the initial stage of rigorous testing and is one step closer to achieving
certification for use in classified government work. The Government Open Systems
Interconnection Profile (GOSIP) test is the first of four that are necessary for DMS certification,
which is required by the U.S. Department of Defense and other government institutions for all
software purchased after January 1, 1997. Ultimately, more than two million government and
military users will have the option of choosing GroupWise DMS as their messaging system.
"DMS certification is the crown jewel in secure messaging," said Stewart Nelson, vice president
and general manager, Novell Applications Division. "GroupWise DMS has shown that it is up to
the challenge of DMS certification and is continuing to be competitive in the government
marketplace. GroupWise is already used by more than 100,000 government employees. By
achieving this certification, Novell will continue to provide government users with the same high
level of confidence and functionality they have come to expect from GroupWise."
By leveraging the GroupWise 5 Object API, GroupWise DMS is able to incorporate native
X.400/X.500 services, which provides direct user access to GOSIP networks using the standard
protocols for Message Access (P7) and Director Access Protocols (DAP). This results in
increased interoperability between GroupWise and other messaging systems, as well as increased
interoperability with non-NDS (Novell Directory Services) directories.
In addition, special service extensions to X.400 messaging standards will be integrated into
GroupWise 5 with added support for the National Security Agency's Fortezza encryption card and
Message Security Protocol. This integration will provide government users with a secure, robust
tool for messaging and collaboration.
With the GOSIP test complete, the second phase of DMS-certification -- conformance testing of
DMS and Fortezza services -- is now underway. Testing of DMS interoperability, functionality
and security -- the final steps in the certification process -- is slated for the first quarter of 1997.
Under a strategic partnership for secure messaging, GroupWise DMS development and testing is
being performed by Raytheon E-Systems, St. Petersburg, Fla. Raytheon E-Systems specializes in
the development of secure communications systems products and networks for the U.S.
Government and will provide military messaging and Fortezza security components for
GroupWise DMS.
"GroupWise DMS enables the user to access secure messaging as easily as commercial E-mail,"
said Terri West, project engineer for Raytheon E-Systems. "All the features of the best
X.400/X.500 products have been added to GroupWise 5 at the desktop. Building, securing and
reading X.400 messages will be a snap for GroupWise DMS users, in addition to all of the other
workgroup benefits that GroupWise 5 provides."
Official testing campaigns for protocol conformance are conducted by the National Computing
Centre, Ltd. (NCC) in Manchester, England, an accredited laboratory that performs conformance
testing in support of the GOSIP testing program. NCC is the test agent authorized for DMS by
the U.S. Joint Interoperability Test Command and the DMS Program Office.
"We have been pleasantly surprised by the smoothness of the Novell/Raytheon campaigns," said
Tim Wells, president of NCC Services, Inc. "Their P7, P22 and DAP products have accurately
met the rigorous requirements of the GOSIP/DMS conformance test regimen. We look forward
to working with Novell and Raytheon during the next steps of their certification."
