Novell's New Management Software to Unify Administration of IntranetWare/NetWare and
Windows NT Network Environments
Novell Administrator for Windows NT Uses NDS to Reduce the Complexity of
Managing Domains
OREM, Utah -- February 18, 1997 -- Novell, Inc. today announced the
availability this month of the Novell Administrator for Windows NT, free of charge for a limited
time via download from the World Wide Web. This new software utility makes it easy for
network administrators to centrally manage users and groups in mixed IntranetWare/NetWare and
Windows NT server environments. Working together with Novell Directory Services (NDS), the
industry's most popular directory technology, Novell Administrator for Windows NT simplifies
user administration and reduces network costs. It largely eliminates the need to administer NT
server domain-based network resources, including trust relationships.
"Customers tell us that adding NT Domains to their environment increases their network
management overhead by approximately 30%," said Marc Epstein, vice president of Novell's
Management Products Division. " Now with Novell Administrator for Windows NT customers
have a single point of control and a single process for managing users and groups. This
significantly shelters them from the complexity of domains."
The Novell Administrator for Windows NT is part of Novell's overall strategy to connect and
manage the broadest range of heterogeneous equipment in intranet and Internet environments.
Novell solutions make the connected enterprise possible by simplifying network management and
administration tasks and allowing organizations to leverage their existing networks.
Heterogeneous Network Environments
Industry press and analysts agree that networks of the future will comprise of multi-vendor,
heterogeneous environments. The continuing strength of IntranetWare sales, paired with the use
of NT as an application server, indicates that many companies are facing the challenge of how
best to manage two separate user directories with different tools.
The Novell Administrator for Windows NT is an add-on to NetWare Administrator (NWAdmin),
Novell's powerful administration interface to NDS. Taking full advantage of NDS, Novell
Administrator for Windows NT combines with NWAdmin to provide a centralized, single point of
administration for users and groups, substantially reducing the cost of owning and managing a
heterogeneous network. This is accomplished by synchronizing Windows NT users and groups
with the NDS database to create one directory for the users in multiple NT domains and in
IntranetWare. NDS then acts as the master repository for all information across entire networks,
ensuring that users get secure access to network resources regardless of where those resources
exist.
David Condrey, LAN systems manager at Clemson University, served as a beta tester for Novell
Administrator for Windows NT. "I don't want my users to have to know what they're logging into
-- I just want the resources to be there for them," said Condrey, who's department administers
more than 37,000 user accounts with NDS. "If we had to set all that up by hand just for the NT
environment, we'd have to hire at least one more person in IS. That's another $50K in salary and,
if things don't integrate well, there's additional user education that has to occur. Fortunately,
Novell Administrator for Windows NT takes care of integrating NT with the rest of the
computing environment so we can administer the entire network with NDS. That's key, because
NDS is the only working option for administering a network this large and complex; there is
nothing else out there that will scale very well to this level."
Saving Time and Costs
The Novell Administrator for Windows NT reduces network management time and costs by
integrating many of the dual-administration tasks typically required in mixed PC/server
environments:
- Eliminates the need to manage users from two separate consoles
- Greatly reduces the labor of administering multiple NT domains by providing a single point
of administration
- Saves entry time by providing templates for creating multiple user accounts
The software tool also automates many of the transition tasks to ensure the quality of NT domain-
based information:
- Migrates current users in NT domains into NDS so that the administrator doesn't have to
manually enter each NT user into NDS
- Reduces and/or eliminates the need for trusts within Windows NT server environments by
managing domains with NDS
- Synchronizes databases to create one global network directory map, allowing changes made
on NDS accounts to automatically reflect on all NT accounts
- Preserves and continually synchronizes any administration changes made during downtime,
including changes made to the Primary Domain Controller (PDC), the master copy of NT
domains, even when the administration console is turned off
In addition, the Novell Administrator for Windows NT is a robust solution that can scale to
support as many as 10,000 users and group objects per domain. The product completely
integrates with NWAdmin to provide end-to-end administration of customers' heterogeneous
networks.
Novell NT Integration Strategy
The Novell Administrator for Windows NT is another component of Novell's comprehensive
solution for integrating Microsoft Windows NT users and servers into business networks,
intranets and the Internet. Other recently released or soon-to-be released components of the
Novell/NT integration solution include:
- Novell Workstation Manager -- integrates Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 3.51
and 4.0 users into business networks, provides users with a single login requirement and centrally
manages users through NDS without requiring NT server domains
- Novell Directory Services for Windows NT -- available later this year, provides NDS
natively on Windows NT to give customers maximum freedom of choice and enable developers to
fully leverage NDS as a cross-platform applications infrastructure
In addition to these recent products, Novell has also provided the following solutions as part of its
overall Novell/NT integration strategy:
- IntranetWare Client for Windows NT
- Novell Application Launcher
- Novell Domain Host Configuration Protocol Server
- ManageWise Agent for Windows NT
- GroupWise 5 for Windows NT
Novell is also offering IntranetWare and Windows NT Integration specialization in the
Client/Network Solutions track of the Master CNE program. These courses teach IS
professionals the skills necessary to integrate Windows NT with IntranetWare, inlcuding methods
for streamlining NT server administration using NDS.
Pricing and Availability
The Novell Administrator for Windows NT will be available the week of February 24, free of
charge for ManageWise and IntranetWare customers for six months. This promotional offer is
