IISME and Novell to Host Free Internet Workshops for Bay Area Educators

Teachers Prepare for Summer Positions in Local High-Tech Companies

SAN JOSE, California -- March 14, 1997 -- Novell announced today it would partner with Industry Initiatives for Science and Math Education (IISME) to host a series of free workshops to help K-12 math, science and technology teachers gain the skills they need to obtain an IISME Summer Fellowship. Each year, IISME offers approximately 100 teachers an eight-week summer assignment in one of 25 sponsoring companies on the premise that when teachers gain industry work experience they become better able to prepare students for success in the workplace.

"Novell keeps its eyes open for opportunities to positively impact the educational process in the community," said Heather Pastorini, community relations manager at Novell. "There's no better way to prepare students for the 21st century than to bolster the technical experience and confidence of their brightest teachers. This teacher training partnership with IISME allows us to do just that."

According to IISME organizers, teacher interest in the summer program is at an all-time high, but many of those who apply for positions discover they lack the computer familiarity expected by potential high-tech employers. Some of the best industry opportunities require the ability to find information on the Internet, to design web pages, and/or to create digital images for desktop publishing and multimedia presentations.

"We hire IISME Fellows for special projects during the summer, and I can't overemphasize the importance of teachers coming into H.P. ready to use the Internet and current software products to complete projects," said Bonnie Flannigan, Hewlett-Packard's Regional K-12 Administrator. "Classes that develop teachers' technical skills can equip IISME applicants to make strong contributions their sponsor companies."

Novell will underwrite the cost of the series -- a total of nine courses to be held at The Technical Museum of Innovation in San Jose and at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, Calif., during March and April. The courses will be taught by experienced instructors, and teacher applicants may attend whichever courses appeal to them on Novell scholarship.

Upon completion of a course, teachers will receive individual certificates that will be added to their IISME applications. Certificates will verify experience with a particular technology and will make participating teachers stand out among applicants for the IISME Summer Fellowship program.

Educators interested in learning more about IISME Summer Fellowships are encouraged to contact Laura Horvath at (408) 496-5341 or E-mail ldhorvath@aol.com. Pre- registration is required for all courses and the class sizes are limited.
