Novell's GroupWise Completes Second Step in DMS Certification Conformance Testing Confirms GroupWise DMS has Necessary Security Components to Fulfill Stringent Requirements of U.S. Military OREM, Utah -- March 20, 1997 -- Novell, Inc. today announced that GroupWise DMS, a version of its award-winning GroupWise 5 collaboration product, has successfully completed the second stage of rigorous testing that is required to achieve certification for use by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). Passage of the Defense Message System (DMS) Protocol Conformance tests ensures that GroupWise DMS supplies the services and security features necessary to fulfill the secure messaging requirements of the U.S. military. GroupWise DMS previously demonstrated conformance to the U.S. Government Open Systems Interconnection Profile (GOSIP) during the first stage of DMS testing and will now proceed to stage three, DMS Interoperability Testing, later this month. According to DoD policy, all E-mail systems and components purchased by the DoD after January 1, 1997, must be certified for the DMS network. This means that any messaging product, including GroupWise, that is certified as DMS compliant by government-approved testing will qualify for DMS use regardless of specific contract agreements. "Novell is committed to providing secure messaging for U.S. and international government users," said Stewart Nelson, vice president and general manager of the Novell Applications Division. "Once we've completed certification, more than two million government users will have the option of selecting GroupWise DMS as their interface into the secure DMS network. Novell continues to strive to develop and deliver the most secure E-mail and collaboration tools for GroupWise users worldwide." GroupWise DMS brings a host of new features directly to the user's desktop in the familiar graphical user interface of GroupWise 5 without the use of gateways or other component add-ons. In addition to all of the advanced collaboration features available with GroupWise 5, the DMS version allows users to create, send, and manage X.400 messages and to directly browse and search the X.500 directories. Command and Control messaging needs are supported through the addition of the Military Messaging Protocol (P772) and the Message Security Protocol (P42). Users can now electronically sign and encrypt their GroupWise messages with the assurance of a U.S. government-approved security architecture that was designed to protect national security. "As users of GroupWise 4.1, we are anxious for the delivery of GroupWise DMS for evaluation," said C. Byrne Huntley, information systems director at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland. "GroupWise DMS will give our users the advanced functionality and collaboration features of GroupWise 5 backed by the security features and protocols needed to communicate with the secure DMS network." About GroupWise GroupWise 5, Novell's premier collaboration product for intranets, is the industry's only expanded E-mail system to include full document management capabilities as part of a Universal Mail Box. The Universal Mail Box also gives users single-point access to personal calendaring, group scheduling, tasks, voice mail, faxes, documents, images and other message types both from the desktop and via the Internet using GroupWise WebAccess. GroupWise WebAccess allows users to access the Universal Mail Box from any HTML-compliant Internet browser. GroupWise 5 provides native support for open Internet standards and protocols, including HTML, SMTP/MIME and TCP/IP, with support for LDAP, POP3, IMAP4, S/MIME and NNTP available later this year.
