Novell Delivers Web Server 3.0 Free Over the Internet

IntranetWare Customers Offered Industry's Only Directory-Enabled Web Publishing Solution, Allowing Most Secure, Easily Administered Intranets

OREM, Utah -- March 18, 1997 -- Novell today announced Internet availability of Novell Web Server™ 3.0, its high-performance solution for publishing Web documents on intranets and the World Wide Web. Novell Web Server 3.0 leverages the strengths of IntranetWare™ and Novell Directory Services™ (NDS™), allowing administrators to save time defining, managing and modifying access to Web site information.

In addition, the new virtual directory feature alleviates the need to copy information to the Web server by allowing Web pages to reside on any IntranetWare or NetWare server. This reduces redundant administrative tasks and ensures up-to-date intranet information. Novell Web Server 3.0 is available to download free of charge at http://www.novell.com.

"In the news industry, security and rapid access to information are a competitive advantage," said Jim Parry, network administrator for The Seattle Times. "Because Novell Web Server 3.0 integrates with NDS, I can easily manage Web pages on our intranet."

Directory Capabilities Simplify Management of Intranets

Novell Web Server 3.0 is the only solution of its kind that allows administrators to access and secure information using comprehensive directory services. Tightly integrated with IntranetWare, Novell Web Server 3.0 leverages the full power of NDS, offering a single point of intranet administration and providing strong security through password authentication. Because it is integrated with Novell Web Server 3.0, administrators can use NDS tools to control access to information stored on Web pages throughout the network. For example, if a human resources department wants to publish confidential staffing information on the intranet, a network administrator can use NDS to assign exclusive viewing rights to those managers directly responsible for employees' personnel files.

NDS integration also enables easy management of virtual directories, a new technology that lets IntranetWare and NetWare servers store Web pages. Previously, information intended for the intranet was created on a network server and then copied to the Web server, requiring updates at both locations. Virtual directories eliminate this redundant task, saving administrators time while ensuring users timely, accurate information. In addition, by distributing Web pages throughout the network, fewer Web servers are required, reducing overall management responsibilities.

SSL 3.0 and NDS Provide Most Secure Intranet Solution

Novell Web Server 3.0 now includes Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), an encryption technology that protects information exchanged between browsers and Web servers. Novell Web Server 3.0 uses NDS and SSL to create the most secure intranet platform available. It preserves data integrity using both private and public keys (also known as digital certificates) that lock and unlock transmitted information. The keys allow IntranetWare customers risk-free delivery of sensitive business information over the Internet and intranets. Each Novell Web Server 3.0 and browser comes with keys, customized to authenticate identity and ensure data security for the customer or organization involved.

"Novell Web Server 3.0 demonstrates Novell's commitment to integrating enterprise networks with Internet and intranet technologies," said Coleman Barney, senior director of marketing for the Internet Access Division at Novell. "Novell Web Server 3.0 offers added value for customers who already enjoy the security, easy installation and simple administration offered by IntranetWare and NDS."

Additional Internet Functionality

Novell Web Server 3.0 also offers IntranetWare customers the following new features and enhancements:
