Novell-Based Solution Also Judged Least Expensive
Orem, UT -- March 20, 1997 -- Novell, Inc. (Nasdaq: NOVL) scored another
victory
this past week when a GroupWise-based centralized messaging solution received the highest
ratings of any
similar solution in a Comparison published in InfoWorld's March 10th issue. GroupWise,
Novell's
premier collaboration product for corporate networks and intranets, was the foundation of a
combined e-
mail, fax and voice mail solution which included FAXserve from the Cheyenne division of
Computer
Associates International, Inc. and CallWare from CallWare Technologies, Inc. The
GroupWise-based
solution received an overall score of 7.5 out of 10.0, compared to scores of 6.3 for the Microsoft
Exchange-based solution and 5.3 for the Lotus Notes-based solution.
GroupWise, FAXserve and CallWare outperformed the other solutions based on combined ratings
in six
different categories: implementation, administration, client aspect, documentation, support
policies and
price. According to InfoWorld's synopsis of the Comparison, "The package that was
worth the
effort -- the GroupWise/FAXserve/CallWare solution -- had the best of everything. It was easy to
integrate
on the back end, offered the most satisfying client-side experience, and was by far the least
expensive. If
you're looking for a centralized messaging solution, this is one marriage that will work. We'll
stand as
witnesses."
InfoWorld further stated that "Only the GroupWise/FAXserve/CallWare solution found a
cost-
benefit sweet spot. In fact, its universal inbox was the best of those compared and the least
expensive to build. ... In many Comparisons, the winner ekes out a victory with the most
acceptable trade-
off of costs and benefits. Not so with the GroupWise/FAXserve/CallWare solution, which
trounced the
competition with unsurpassed administrative features, the best universal inbox, and the cheapest
sticker
price." According to InfoWorld's cost calculations for the Comparison, the
GroupWise/FAXserve/CallWare solution cost US$117.12 per user for 500 users, while the
Microsoft
Exchange-based solution cost US$214.00 per user for 450 users and the Lotus Notes-based
solution cost
US$337.89 per user for 450 users.
"InfoWorld's selection of the GroupWise/FAXserve/CallWare solution as their favorite
Universal
Mailbox shows we're succeeding with our partners in making centralized messaging as easy as
e-mail," said
Ed McGarr, vice-president of marketing, Novell Applications Division. "For those who want to
be able to
go to one place for e-mail, voice mail, faxes and other information, InfoWorld's
Comparison
shows that our Universal Mailbox provides the easiest and best functionality at the best price."
"This is great news for GroupWise users. Novell continues to lead the industry in offering its
customers the
most advanced collaboration product available today," said Paul Cook, computer systems
specialist, Utah
State University. "As this Comparison shows, GroupWise provides superior e-mail, voice mail
and fax
integration, and is still the best choice for a centralized messaging solution."
"We have many customers utilizing the CallWare/GroupWise unified messaging system, all of
whom have
been extremely pleased with the productivity-enhancing features of this solution. The
InfoWorld
review reinforces the feedback we have received from both our clients and resellers. All users can
benefit
from a superior and affordable unified messaging solution by combining CallWare voice mail with
GroupWise," said Reino O. Kerttula, president and CEO of CallWare Technologies.
"InfoWorld's test results show clearly how customers can benefit from the seamless
integration of
FAXserve 5 with Novell's GroupWise architecture," said Wayne Lam, vice-president and general
manager,
NetWare Division of CA's Cheyenne division. "FAXserve 5 combined with GroupWise provides
the most
complete and powerful network fax solution available for GroupWise customers today."
This latest win for GroupWise joins a string of recent awards from other top trade publications.
Network World recognized GroupWise 5 with its World Class Award, given to products
which
achieve a rating of 9 or above on their product scorecard. The editors of PC Computing
selected
GroupWise 5 as the winner of the 1996 Most Valuable Product (MVP) Award in the E-mail and
Collaboration category, and Computer Reseller News awarded GroupWise 5 its
"Recommended
Status" from testing in the Fall 1996 Comdex Test Center.
