Sun's Project Studio Technology First Licensed by Novell
Novell to make Java technology available to every IntranetWare user
BRAINSHARE, SALT LAKE CITY, UT -- March 24, 1997 -- Continuing the
strategic
relationship forged in November, Novell, Inc. today announced the licensing of Project Studio
Java
development technology from Sun Microsystems, Inc. Project Studio technology will be
integrated with
future versions of IntranetWare, Novell's full-service intranet and Internet access
platform.
Project Studio will enable information workers to quickly and easily create Internet and intranet
Java solutions without writing programs or scripts. Project Studio's visual development
environment uses the JavaBeans component architecture, a reusable component approach
to
programming that allows non-programmers to create programs from building blocks of
pre-written code
called 'Beans.'
"Over time, Beans will become a unit of work in Java, not just a control architecture," said Jeff
Morgenthal, Analyst/Editor, In The Final Analysis..., a newsletter covering distributed
computing.
"With
Java WorkShop, Novell provided the basic required development environment for
IntranetWare.
But by licensing Project Studio, Novell enables a flexible architecture for extending
IntranetWare
functionality to all NetWare users."
Project Studio's Visual Java technology and JavaBeans component architecture will enable a
broad new
class of users to quickly and easily create Internet and intranet applications that take advantage of
network
services such as Novell Directory Services (NDS) without writing a single line of
code.
"Project Studio will make network solutions development faster and easier" said Denise Gibson,
senior vice
president of Internet Products at Novell. "With Project Studio's Visual Java technology, Novell is
unleashing the power of NDS and other Novell network services to information workers
including
end
users, Web masters, IT managers, network administrators and developers. The resulting "services
aware"
solutions are Java based and run on any Java platform."
"Project Studio enables end-users to access, change, and share information without writing a
single line of
code," said Larry Weber, vice president, WorkShop Products, Sun Microsystems, Inc. "Project
Studio will
include an extensive collection of reusable JavaBeans components to enable the easy and rapid
creation of
solutions."
Added Weber, "With this announcement, Novell will deliver to its customers the premiere Visual
Java
toolset for visually creating intranet and Internet solutions including applets, applications, and
aggregate
components."
Today's announcement builds on Sun and Novell's earlier agreement to make Sun's
award-winning
Java WorkShop development environment available to Novell's developer
community.
Project Studio and other Java technologies licensed from Sun are advancing Novell's strategy to
provide an
open, industry-standard environment on IntranetWare for developing and executing Internet and
intranet
solutions. The alliance opens up a significant new business channel for Sun and provides an easy
way for
Novell's installed user base to leverage the security, ease of use and "Write Once, Run
Anywhere"
benefits of Java.
