Novell Demonstrates Advanced Distributed Clustering at BrainShare '97

Wolf Mountain Technology Shows High Availability and Scalability on 12-Node Server Cluster

Salt Lake City, Utah -- March 26,1997 -- Novell, Inc. will preview its Wolf Mountain technologies for advanced distributed computing, including a new clustering capability, at its BrainShare '97 conference underway here through March 28. In today's keynote address, Novell senior vice president Vic Langford will demonstrate Wolf Mountain's ability to provide Novell customers with their most available, scalable, and easily managed networks yet.

Novell will also highlight clustering technologies for BrainShare attendees in the BrainShare '97 New Technology Lab. The demonstration features the truly distributed Wolf Mountain server environment powered by 12 high-power, Intel-based network servers, or nodes. Each server in the cluster contains four 200-MHZ Intel PentiumPro processors, for a total of 48 processors operating as a single system.

"Advanced Clustering is only one of the networking technologies currently in development at Novell," said Langford, senior vice president, Internet Strategies. "We are also leading the charge to the next wave of network computing in several other areas. For example, this week we announced 'border services' that enable customers to securely manage the interface between the intranet and the Internet. We also addressed implications for integrated file, storage, and directories in a highly networked environment, as well as support for Intel's future 64-bit platform and the eventual independence of network service from specific operating systems."

By integrating the processor, memory, storage systems and network connections of several network servers in a cluster configuration, customers can create a highly available, scalable and easily managed network. Such systems not only ensure the network has no single point of failure, but also combine the processing and networking power of the interconnected network servers. These benefits build on the success of Novell's high-availability, scalable solutions such as SFT III, ABEND Recovery and Symmetric Multiprocessing (SMP).

"In addition to high availability and scalability, Novell's Wolf Mountain clustering technologies enables significant performance enhancements through system load balancing," commented Jeff Merkey, chief scientist for the Wolf Mountain Technologies at Novell. "By sharing the load across all the processors in the cluster, customers will be able to better utilize the processing power and system resources in their computing environment."

Novell has been working on the Wolf Mountain technologies with the support of a wide range of partners--such as Cheyenne, Compaq, Dolphin, G2 Networks, Intel, Oracle, Tandem, and Unisys--who are also pursuing the development of clustering-enabled hardware and software. Novell and its partners are focusing on creating a highly available, scalable solution that runs a variety of applications on industry-standard hardware and operating systems.

"We are very excited about the Wolf Mountain technology because we see it as a scalable and fault- tolerant platform for Oracle Parallel server," said Gary Bloom, senior vice president, Worldwide Alliances and Technologies Division of Oracle Corporation. "We are working closely with Novell and see this as yet another opportunity to expand the offering of Oracle technologies on the Novell network platform."

Clustering solutions will also offer additional management benefits. Although the system consists of several individual servers, the system administrator views a single system image, allowing all the servers to be managed as a unit. This also enables network users to view and work on the system as a single entity making it easy to find and use applications and information.
