Novell Hosts 800 Young Women for a Day of High Technology in California
Employee Daughters, At-Risk Teens Gain Opportunity to Learn from Networking
Professionals
San Jose, California -- April 22, 1997-- Novell, Inc. employees on Thursday, April 24
will welcome hundreds of young women from throughout Silicon Valley for a day of hands-on experience
with the company's market-leading networking software. The young women will observe Novell
professionals on the job and participate in a range of tutorials on high-tech and career development topics
as part of Novell's fifth annual Young Women in Technology Day, held in conjunction with the nationally
recognized Take Our Daughters to Work Day sponsored by the Ms. Foundation.
"Young women prepared for high-tech careers are in great demand," said Jennifer Konecny-Costa, Novell
senior vice president for Human Resources. "We would like to see many more female applicants for
positions such as software engineers. All that's needed is for more young women to picture themselves in
high-tech careers, and to understand the roles they can play in the development of tomorrow's technology.
That's precisely what we aim to accomplish with Young Women in Technology Day. We want our visitors
to walk away thinking about the impact of current technology in their daily lives and believing that their
ideas and talents will make a difference in the future."
Novell's guests for the day include both employees' daughters and young women enrolled in YWCA
programs and alternative high schools. Novell invites many at-risk teens from disadvantaged backgrounds,
several of whom have written the company to comment on their positive experiences at past Novell events
and the new outlook they gained on future opportunities.
While the young women shadow Novell employee sponsors, they will see the work environment up close
and be able to ask questions. Novell senior women executives and other top managers will lead the
breakout tutorials, with topics including an introduction to the Internet/Intranet, how to build your own
Web site, and tips on resume writing, filling out employment applications, and interviewing skills.
Novell's CEO and chairman, Dr. Eric Schmidt, will participate in the events in San Jose.
"Young Women in Technology today reflects Novell's values and the commitments we make to our
employees and the community," he said. "As part of our support for diversity in the workplace, we are
reaching out to encourage young women to pursue career opportunities in high technology. This day also
enriches our community by helping young women discover new opportunities and role models, and to take
what they learn back to their schools and neighborhoods."
