Novell Announces GroupWise Support for Intranet Document Management Standard
PROVO, Utah -- May 5, 1997 -- Novell, Inc. today announced that
GroupWise, through
its Jefferson Project technology, will be the first product to support the recently announced
intranet
extensions to the Open Document Management API (DMA). The intranet extensions expand the
scope of
existing ODMA standards, to which the GroupWise document management system currently
adheres, by
providing a framework for linking ODMA-compliant document management systems to corporate
intranets.
Any document created with an ODMA-compliant document management system will now be
accessible
through a Web browser.
Novell will comply with the new ODMA standard through the Jefferson Project, Novell's
technology
initiative that enables GroupWise users to publish and update information on the Internet and
intranets as
easily as creating and modifying information within their favorite desktop application. Any
changes made to
the content or the access rights of a document are automatically reflected in that document on the
Web,
eliminating the need for constant republishing of Web pages. The Jefferson Project is server-based
technology that is integrated with GroupWise and will be available for IntranetWare and Windows
NT
environments later this year.
"GroupWise is committed to giving our customers choice by supporting important industry
standards," said
Stewart Nelson, vice president and general manager, Novell Applications Division. "That's why
we are the
first document management system to support this intranet standard. Our customers want to
extend the
GroupWise document capabilities they have today to their intranet users. The Jefferson Project
will simplify
the process of accessing and managing documents on the World Wide Web and put the power of
Web
publishing into the hands of everyone."
"This standard will allow everyone on our corporate intranet to experience powerful document
management
capabilities," said Jim Shaw, Operations Manager, CompNet Service. "In addition, with the
Jefferson Project,
we will be able to let casual users -- employees who don't regularly work on a PC or don't use the
GroupWise
client -- take part in document management through a Web browser, without further investment in
software or
training. Novell's support of standards like this continues to improve the functionality and results
we receive
from GroupWise."
Novell is a current sponsor of the ODMA Task Force, an industry coalition established by the
Association for
Information and Image Management International (AIIM) that is responsible for developing this
new set of
intranet extensions to the ODMA standard. The ODMA intranet extensions consist of a technical
specification for using Web communications standards, such as URLs, to locate and access
documents across
an intranet. The URLs can be processed by CGI, ISAPI or NSAPI Web servers and use other
Web standards
including HTML and HTTP. This provides authorized users with access to documents from any
client device
that is able to run a Web browser.
Jefferson Project Leverages ODMA Standard
Any document that has been saved in a GroupWise library and marked as a shared Internet or
intranet
document will automatically be compliant with the ODMA intranet standard and accessible from
any Web
browser or ODMA-compliant document management system. The document will be converted to
HTML and
will reflect the organization's look and feel whenever it is requested by a user. The Jefferson
Project is
intelligent enough to designate multiple presentations of the same document to accommodate the
diverse
Internet presentation capabilities of desktop computers, laptops, personal digital assistants
(PDAs) and
televisions.
Within the GroupWise document management system, all documents remain in the native format
in which
they were created, allowing users to easily update documents they have posted to the Web
without having to
learn HTML. All changes to a document are reflected immediately, ensuring that users'
subsequent requests
for that document will always return the latest update.
When long documents, such as research papers, are requested from users on the Web, the
Jefferson Project
automatically publishes a table of contents to the users, saving Web users -- especially home users
relying on
modems -- unnecessary waiting time by allowing them to preview lengthy documents before
choosing to
download them. The table of contents feature also lets users download a portion of a document
rather than the
entire document.
Pricing, Availability and Platforms
The Jefferson Project will go into open beta this summer and will be available for download from
Novell's
Public Beta Web site at http://support.novell.com/home/pubbeta/.
Further
details on pricing, upgrades and distribution will be made available when the product ships later
this year.
