"The Internet and Beyond: Novell Rocks the Net"
Remarks as Prepared For Delivery By: Denice Gibson, Senior Vice President and
General
Manager, Internet Products, Novell, Inc.
Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, New York
NEW YORK -- May 19, 1997 -- Denice Gibson of Novell, Inc. today
addressed a
gathering of customer executives, IT analysts, and media at the Solomon R. Guggenheim
Museum in New
York City. Her remarks are as follows.
The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum is one of the finest facilities of its kind in the world.
Thanks to
Novell software, the Guggenheim also is one of the most technically advanced art museums in the
world.
This past weekend, the museum's network was upgraded to the latest versions of Novell's key
technology
platforms ... what we call our Power Brands.
The Guggenheim's enhanced network infrastructure includes all the technologies you need to
establish a full
service intranet ...
... all the technologies you need to leverage the value of the Internet to meet real business
problems. And
this all happened over the weekend ... with No "rip and replace."
The museum's intranet capabilities and Internet connectivity rest on foundation stones laid with
Novell's
Power Brands:
- Network services, including ManageWise and Novell Directory Services ... a global directory
of all
network resources,
- Internet-enabled collaboration services with GroupWise,
- IntranetWare ... Novell's flagship network OS and full-service intranet platform,
- And an exciting new product ... known during development as border services ... which
provides full
security, management and performance enhancement for intranet-to-Internet connectivity.
Today, we're announcing the result of the border services project ... a new product we're naming
Novell
BorderManager.
In a few minutes, Novell Chief Scientist Drew Major will explain the technology behind Novell
BorderManager ... highlight the benefits this new product can bring to any organization that needs
to do
business on the Internet ... and demonstrate its capabilities.
With facilities in Venice, Italy, and Bilbao, Spain, the Guggenheim museum is a natural candidate
for
Novell BorderManager technology.
The Guggenheim decided the easiest way to get an intranet ... and take full advantage of the
Internet ... was
by upgrading to IntranetWare. A few weeks ago ... we told Len Steinbach, the Guggenheim's
director of
information technology, about Novell BorderManager.
Since the Guggenheim is an international institution, the virtual private network (VPN)
capabilities
in BorderManager really caught Len's attention. Len quickly realized Novell services at the border
had the
potential to use the Internet for low cost ... yet highly secure ... "private" connections between the
museum's
international sites.
It's a perfect example of putting the Internet to work as a business tool. It also represents a key
reason why
the Internet/intranet market is growing so rapidly.
Novell BorderManager offers tremendous security and management capabilities driven through
Novell
Directory Services ... the same way NDS provides granular management of ALL network
resources.
I'd like to focus on NDS for a moment because I can't stress enough how NDS increases the value
of
IntranetWare ... UNIX ... NT ... and so much more.
NDS ... free to users on IntranetWare and most major UNIX platforms ... provides a single,
global view of
all network information and resources through a single log-in.
NDS has Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, or LDAP, support ... which means NDS is the
only directory a business really needs.
NDS is LDAP!
With more than 20 million users and a significant technological advantage ... NDS is the directory
of
choice for the world's largest business networks.
NDS customers include Deutsche Telekom, AT&T and NTT. These
companies operate
networks that literally support millions of users ... now that's scalability!
We've evolved NetWare to IntranetWare ... turning it into a platform customers can use to build
intranets
... or convert existing systems into intranets.
IntranetWare is a natural extension of our installed base of 60 million NetWare users. It leverages
what
businesses already have. There's no need to rip and replace. With a relatively simple IntranetWare
upgrade
... combined with GroupWise, NDS and ManageWise ... customers gain the business benefits of a
full-
service intranet solution.
While many vendors talk about intranet and Internet products and solutions ... Novell is delivering
high-
quality solutions ... now. A full-service intranet. Today.
You can't talk about networking without talking about collaboration and groupware. With more
than 8
million users, GroupWise is the second most widely used collaboration product today.
A recent study by independent research firm Creative Networks showed that GroupWise saves
$469 per
employee each year over Lotus Notes and Microsoft Exchange.
The study also found that GroupWise administration and management is far more efficient than
Notes or
Exchange.
We'll deliver new collaboration solutions over the next six months. In the third quarter, we'll
release the
latest version of WebAccess, our web-based client ... with enhanced Internet support. We'll also
release the
Mac and UNIX clients for GroupWise 5.1.
Later this year, we'll provide Web document management and imaging for our GroupWise
platform.
GroupWise provides common administration and management that significantly reduce the cost of
ownership. Training, management and deployment costs are lower with GroupWise ... and
employee
productivity is enhanced ... all of which explains why our GroupWise customer base is growing at
75
percent annually.
Fully integrated with NDS, GroupWise provides integrated scheduling, calendaring and E-mail.
Even if
you're traveling overseas, you can use these collaborative functions over the Internet through
GroupWise
Web Access.
ManageWise is a key part of a full-service intranet solution ... helping lower networking costs. In
fact, it
takes ManageWise less than 20 days to pay for itself in terms of reduced administration costs.
Maybe that's one reason ManageWise won Network Magazine's 1997 Product of the Year
award
... and this slide shows some other, more technical, reasons it's a winner!
It already manages more than 5 million network nodes, and we're improving it all the time. We
just
enhanced ManageWise to include support for remote downloading of software across networks.
Using NDS-based security and administration ... Novell Application Launcher allows
administrators
centralized control ... to automatically distribute applications to the desktop.
This substantially lowers customers' overall desktop cost of ownership. In the second half of
1997,
ManageWise will gain Java capabilities for management over the Internet.
The Guggenheim's network upgrade is part of Novell's "Taking it to the Streets" program ... it's
all about
building intranets for customers ...
... upgrading networks in the most cost effective way possible
... leveraging the power of the robust networking capabilities of IntranetWare
... using GroupWise, ManageWise and Web tools
... all centered on and administered through NDS.
Integrated messaging ... management ... administration ... browsing ... and of course
BorderManager ...
... Novell brings structure to the Internet and makes it a serious business tool.
The Novel BorderManager suite isn't the only new technology Novell is delivering. With
IntranetWare
HostPublisher, standard Web browsers can provide cost-effective access to data and applications
on IBM
host systems. HostPublisher delivers mainframe data on corporate intranets with a high level of
security,
thanks to the power of NDS.
We'll deliver a number of other key products later this summer ...
- Intelligent, Internet-enabled printing technology in Novell Distributed Print Services ... with
"plug and
print" capability to ease IT administration and user control of printers
- The IntranetWare Java Application Environment ... including Java Virtual Machine,
Just-in-Time
Compiler and Java class libraries ... to increase IntranetWare's efficiency for building and
executing
distributed, mission-critical intranet applications.
- And Novell Replication Services ... which we're announcing today ... automates the process
of
synchronizing information across a wide area ... to improve data consistency and availability
throughout a
business's network ... on wide area lines ... and across the Internet.
Novell Replication Services takes full advantage of NDS ... easing distribution of information
across
LANs, WANs or the Internet. NRS puts business information ... documents, applications, Web
pages and
more ... closer to the people who need it.
Information is only valuable if it's accurate ... and available to the people who need it. That's what
NRS is
all about ... and there's nothing else like it on the market.
For example, in a one-way configuration, NRS could allow vital corporate data to be replicated
among
servers at regional or branch offices ... whether they're across town, or across the ocean. NRS
supports
two-way replication, so information or changes generated at remote offices ... or by business
partners ... is
available wherever it's needed on the network.
NRS can control costs since only files that have changed are replicated ... and you can schedule
synchronization to take place during lower cost, off-peak hours. Also, combining NRS with the
VPN
capabilities in Novell BorderManager reduces cost by leveraging the Internet.
One other important feature of NRS is that it's available next week!
Novell has always been recognized as the leader in delivering highly scalable, enterprise solutions.
Combined with the robust capabilities of Novell's Power Brands, these new technologies will
extend
Novell's lead in delivering mission-critical, scalable solutions.
And speaking of scalability ... when we introduced IntranetWare late last year, it was supported
for
installations up to 1,000 users on a single server. Novell eliminated that ceiling in an
announcement just
last week.
Already, a number of customers have thousands of users on a single IntranetWare server.
For
example, San Diego-based Qualcomm ... a leading supplier of digital wireless communications
products
and technologies ... grouped three thousand users on one IntranetWare server.
Qualcomm's Kevin Workman reports: "IntranetWare's scalability allows us to get more for our
money."
For several months, insurance provider Blue Cross of Western Pennsylvania has been running an
IntranetWare server averaging between 2,400 and 2,700 users.
According to Ray Hricik, LAN services manager, "Without Novell Directory Services, we could
never
support this many users on one system."
No other network OS in the industry can scale to meet enterprise demands like that!
Internet/intranet technology puts computing at the very core of the enterprise ... and Novell
technologies
will be at the core of this market because of the values they represent.
Novell offerings adhere to four basic values:
- Interoperability. You want to choose the best vendor for a given purpose ... so your
networks are a
mixed environment. Our solutions, products and services are based on open standards ... and
work
smoothly with other major products and services.
- Low cost of ownership. A Novell network is less expensive to own than any other ... as much
as 28
percent less.
- Security. As networks become larger and more interconnected ... and are used for
mission-critical
applications ... they need to be secure. Novell provides that security.
- Performance and reliability. You need to get the most out of your servers ... and connections.
Novell
delivers the best performing, most scalable network solutions in the world ... solutions with
mission-critical
reliability.
You might say those are Novell's family values ...
Throughout 1997 and beyond ... Novell will deliver exciting new technologies
... support for Intel's new 64-bit chip for improved performance
... advanced file system support, being delivered as Novell Storage Services, to enhance
capabilities to meet
mission-critical enterprise requirements ...
And the next release of IntranetWare ... code named Moab ... will bring together many advanced
services
and technologies ... delivered along with open, standard IP. Moab also will include a highly
scalable kernel
with memory protection.
All these new technologies will bring still greater capabilities to IntranetWare ... already the
industry's most
scalable networking platform. Looking farther down the road ... another exciting area is Novell's
technology development project code named Wolf Mountain ...
Leading the industry in 1993, Novell delivered a high availability, fail-over solution with SFT III.
A multi-
million dollar business for Novell for four years, it also provides automatic client switchover ...
and it does
it on industry standard hardware.
If Microsoft's public statements concerning Wolf Pack are accurate, they'll be catching up with
Novell
technology in these areas late this year ... but Novell isn't standing still.
The Wolf Mountain project is developing technologies that ... when incorporated in Novell
offerings ... will
deliver solutions that support open industry standards like Intel-based hardware, network
adapters, cluster
interconnection devices, and Java.
Wolf Mountain is developing advanced technology that will bring real benefits to business ...
Greater system availability provides increased reliability ...
... load balancing across the cluster improves performance, allowing you to get maximum return
on your IT
investments
... the power of NDS and a "single system image" for the cluster ensures the most complete and
robust
management capability possible.
You can see a demonstration of a 12 node cluster -- incorporating 48 Intel Pentium Pro
processors -- here
today. The 12 server node cluster is actually on the low end of what we have running in the lab.
But as you
can see, we just couldn't fit a bigger demonstration into the room!
The new technologies we're delivering this summer ... and advanced development projects
underway ...
mean today's most reliable server OS is getting even more reliable. IntranetWare provides
customers the
most reliable, most scalable network environment available. And Novell BorderManager is
extending those
capabilities into the Internet ... and beyond.
These technologies ... from replication services to advanced storage ... from clustering to Java ...
from
groupware to directory services ... represent the most Internet friendly ... mission-critical-ready ...
and
scalable set of networking solutions in the industry.
