UBS Switzerland selects Novell's IntranetWare
Zurich -- June 9, 1997 -- The Union Bank of Switzerland UBS (UBS Switzerland) has
declared its intention to introduce Novell's IntranetWare as its operating system on over 600 network
servers throughout Switzerland. The deciding factors that led to this choice were high performance and
security as well as low costs resulting from the introduction of Novell Directory Services (NDS). Migration
to the new operating system has already been launched successfully and is expected to be completed on all
22'000 workplaces in Switzerland by the beginning of 1998.
A powerful and secure network is an important prerequisite for the commercial success of the Union Bank
of Switzerland (UBS). In 1991, UBS Switzerland already made the decision to implement Novell's
NetWare 3.11 as its network operating system. That product has since proved itself as very reliable and
stable and never gave cause for any complaints worth mentioning. They also had very good experience with
Novell's support group. Nevertheless, they reached the point when functionality that corresponds to today's
level of development was required. Their attention was drawn to Novell's IntranetWare with its new
directory service NDS which offered, for the first time, the possibility of managing the network centrally
and simply and hence to save costs. However, for the UBS as a big bank, the security aspect was also a
high priority. Apart from this, co-operation with a market leader needed to be ensured. Besides
IntranetWare, Windows NT was also shortlisted for consideration.
Reasons for the Decision
UBS Switzerland chose IntranetWare after an in-depth examination. The reasons for this decision were
lower costs and simpler management of the system, security aspects, comprehensive functionality and
power, easy extendibility as well as the promise of a quick and smooth migration to the new system. The
fact that Novell is a world-wide market leader with its network operating system and that IntranetWare has
proved itself in other important large enterprises also increased its trustworthiness. Novell was able to offer
a comprehensive maintenance contract and will competently support the big bank during its introduction
and operation of the system. The banks' good experience with NetWare 3.11 also created trust in the new
version. The system administrators of the UBS had already acquired a lot of expertise in dealing with
NetWare, a fact that further supported the choice of Novell. The migration of the existing operating system
to version 4.11 is also expected to be relatively simple.
Novell Directory Services
The most important and decisive innovation in IntranetWare is Novell Directory Services, NDS. It makes
the entire network look like a single coherent system. NDS enables simple and flexible adjustments of the
network to ongoing changes to be made from central locations and so simplifies administration. With NDS,
a resource such as a printer needs to be registered once only throughout the whole of the UBS. The new
version is also distinguished by improved performance: IntranetWare enables improved usage of hard disk
space and offers considerable improvements and enhancements in the implementation of network protocols,
IPX in particular. Also, the integration into existing world-wide and local networks is very straightforward.
Security
For the UBS it is a key requirement to keep their systems' reliability and security at the highest possible
standard. Novell has improved the authorising and access controls of IntranetWare considerably. The
supervisor has comprehensive control through the auditing option. It allows him/her to trace each users'
access to data, software and network services. NDS ensures that the administrator can assign access rights
for each user and can block certain services for security reasons. New programmes may be installed
centrally after a check with a virus protection programme.
Costs
Novell was also convincing in terms of costs. The licensing costs were lower than those of Windows NT --
the risk of migration to IntranetWare was also seen as more calculable. Training costs are fairly low due to
the support staff's many years of experience of Novell systems. Thanks to NDS, administration of the
system is simplified and costs relating to it will also be reduced.
