FILA Standardizes Its Growing Global Network on Novell's IntranetWare
Novell Directory Services Manages FILA's Expanding Network; IntranetWare Provides
Superior
Reliability, Scalability
PROVO, Utah -- July 8, 1997 -- FILA, a $700 million leader in the sports
footwear and
apparel market, today announced that it has chosen Novell's IntranetWare as the global
networking platform
to serve 1,300 of its employees in eight locations worldwide for file sharing, printing, e-mail and a
variety of
applications. As a rapidly growing company, FILA says it chose IntranetWare primarily because
the
industry-leading global directory, Novell Directory Services (NDS), is the only directory service
that can
provide scalable and cost-effective network management. This decision marks a dramatic
turnaround from the
company's original plan to standardize on a competitive platform.
With revenues increasing from $100 million to $700 million in just over two years, FILA needed a
networking solution that could manage multiple sites efficiently and cost-effectively, and would
expand as
rapidly as the company continues to grow. FILA had begun deployment of a competitive server
operating
system before moving to its new corporate headquarters in Maryland late last year. Once the
deployment was
underway, however, FILA discovered that it needed the single-point, centralized administration
and
scalability of IntranetWare and NDS to handle the company's growing network. FILA is now in
the process of
replacing the seven servers it installed to manage its pilot network of 500 corporate users, with
two
IntranetWare servers to manage the same environment.
"With FILA growing so rapidly, we needed networking technology that could keep up with our
expanding
needs," said John Eby, manager of Personal Computing at FILA. "IntranetWare is a strategic
choice for
FILA. It allows us to manage our current network of multiple sites around the world efficiently,
while offering
the features necessary for us to incorporate critical new technologies at our own pace. From an IS
perspective,
using IntranetWare reduces the number of people who need to be involved in managing the
network," said
Eby. "Not having a centralized directory was a big constraint for us in managing our growing
network. NDS
solves all of that by allowing us to manage everything centrally, no matter how much the company
grows."
As well as leveraging NDS to manage its global, heterogeneous network, FILA benefits from
several other
key IntranetWare features to meet its networking needs. IntranetWare's multiprotocol router
handles all
routing between the company's Maryland, Hong Kong and Italy sites. FILA also uses the
IntranetWare Client
32 for Windows 95 to give its 1,000-plus Windows 95 desktops complete access to all network
resources.
The company also has plans to install ManageWise, the only comprehensive, integrated
management solution
that lets businesses successfully manage and optimize their networks, to control its growing
network.
"There's no doubt that IntranetWare offers our customers the most complete networking solution
shipping
today, with all the features they need to run networks of every size," said Coleman Barney, vice
president of
marketing at Novell. "FILA is a perfect example of how a growing organization can leverage the
incredible
strengths of IntranetWare and NDS to manage its entire network, while enjoying the flexibility to
integrate
special-purpose servers into its environment."
