Novell Demonstrates Wolf Mountain Clustering at BrainShare Australia and Announces New
Partners
Fujitsu, IBM and HP Join Novell in Development of Scalable, Highly Available
Networks
Provo, Utah -- July 10, 1997 -- Novell, Inc. will demonstrate its Wolf Mountain
technologies for advanced distributed computing, including a clustering capability that brings new levels of
availability, scalability, and manageability to customer networks at its BrainShare '97 conference in
Sydney, Australia, July 9 through 11.
This first demonstration of Novell's clustering technology in Australia includes the participation of two new
Wolf Mountain partners who are working with Novell on cluster-enabled hardware and software: Hewlett-
Packard and IBM. Novell and its partners are focusing on creating a highly available, scalable solution that
runs a variety of applications on industry-standard hardware and operating systems. Additional Novell
partners in the Wolf Mountain initiative include Compaq/Tandem, Cheyenne, Dolphin Interconnect
Solutions, Fujitsu, G2 Networks, Intel, Mitsubishi/Apricot, Olivetti, Oracle, Siemens Nixdorf and Unisys.
"We are excited to be working with Novell to help make Wolf Mountain part of the high availability
solution that HP brings to our IntranetWare customers," said Gabe Gotthard, world wide product
marketing manager for HP's Network Server Division. "IntranetWare customers need a comprehensive
solution and growth path for their mission-critical, Intel-based environments, in which high availability and
scalability play a key role."
"Fujitsu Group is pleased with Novell's Wolf Mountain technology and its ability to bring a scalable,
highly available solution to the mass market on an Intel-based hardware platform," said Isao Katayanagi,
Director of Software Division, Fujitsu Limited. "We will work together with Novell to assure that the Wolf
Mountain technologies are tuned to scale on Fujitsu's server offerings."
The Novell demonstration features the truly distributed Wolf Mountain clustered server environment
configured with 12 high-power, Intel processor-based network servers, or nodes. The cluster consists of
servers from several Novell partners, showing the ability of a variety of Intel processor-based servers to
interoperate in a unified environment. In addition, each server has from one to four Pentium Pro processors,
demonstrating the flexibility to leverage mixed processor platforms in the cluster to create a virtual single
system.
"Novell is leading the industry with the development of Intel processor-based clustering technologies for a
highly networked environment," said Dr. Glenn Ricart, Novell's chief technology officer. "Our new
clustering capability, support for Intel's future 64-bit architecture, and other advanced technologies will
keep our customers ahead of the technology curve through the end of the century and beyond."
By integrating the processor, memory, storage systems and network connections of several network servers
in a cluster configuration, customers can create a highly available, scalable and easily managed network.
Such systems not only ensure the network has no single point of failure, but also combine the processing
and networking power of the interconnected network servers. These benefits build on the success of
Novell's high-availability, scalable solutions such as SFT III, ABEND Recovery, Novell Storage Services
(NSS), Novell Replication Services (NRS), Novell Directory Services (NDS), and Symmetric
Multiprocessing (SMP).
In addition to high availability, Wolf Mountain also provides load balancing capabilities to enhance
performance enabling customers to better utilize the resources of the network. In addition, the clustered
environment enables the system administrator to view a single system image, allowing all the servers to be
managed as a unit. This also enables network users to view and work on the system as a single entity
making it easy to find and use applications and information.
