Novell's GroupWise Completes DMS Conformance Registration to Provide Secure Messaging for Government Users

GroupWise is the Only E-Mail Solution to Provide Full Protocol Support

PROVO, Utah -- July 15, 1997 -- Novell, Inc. today announced that GroupWise™ DMS, a version of its award-winning GroupWise 5 collaboration solution, has successfully completed all protocol conformance testing required for compliance with the U.S. Defense Message System (DMS). DMS certification, which ensures products provide the services and features necessary for secure messaging, is required by the U.S. Department of Defense and other government agencies for all E-mail software purchased after January 1, 1997. Ultimately, more than two million government and military users will have the option of choosing GroupWise DMS as their messaging system.

"We are particularly proud that our product has been registered without compromising any of the high standards set by the Department of Defense for protocol support," said Stewart Nelson, vice president and general manager, Novell Collaborative Services Division. "While others are backing away from DMS requirements, Novell is demonstrating its commitment to full compliance. A recent survey by Federal Computer Week revealed that the majority of frequent E-mail users in government use GroupWise. This registration confirms our uncompromising commitment to supporting government users with the functions, performance and security they require."

As part of that commitment, Novell is maintaining an aggressive certification schedule. Interoperability Testing, which ensures GroupWise DMS is fully compatible with the other DMS products, is already underway at the government's Joint Interoperability Test Center (JITC) at Fort Huachuca, AZ.

GroupWise DMS is being integrated by Raytheon E-Systems under a strategic partnership for secure messaging. Raytheon E-Systems specializes in the development of secure communications systems products and networks for the U.S. government and provides messaging and security components for GroupWise DMS.

"Full-featured secure messaging under industry standards is no longer a dream; it's a reality," said Hampton Powers, product manager for Raytheon E-Systems. "GroupWise DMS is a practical solution that will meet the exacting needs of both users and network administrators, while helping them benefit from Novell's vision of providing a broad range of key network services on the Internet and intranets."

"Novell's approach to achieving full DMS compliance demonstrates its commitment to adapting an already powerful product to meet the needs of government users for secure messaging," said Teresa Weismiller of the U.S. Army Program Executive Office for Air and Missile Defense Information Management department. "As current GroupWise users, we are thrilled with Novell's aggressive DMS certification schedule; it will allow us to continue to achieve the utmost efficiency in communication and decision- making through GroupWise, and to comply with the new guidelines set by the U.S. government."

GroupWise DMS brings a host of new features directly to the user's desktop in the familiar graphical user interface of GroupWise 5, without the use of gateways or other component add-ons. In addition to the advanced collaboration features available with GroupWise 5, the DMS version allows users to create, send and manage X.400 messages and to directly browse and search the X.500 directories. Command and Control messaging needs are supported through the addition of the Military Messaging Protocol (P772) and the Message Security Protocol (P42). Users can now electronically sign and encrypt their GroupWise messages with the assurance of a U.S. government-approved security architecture that was designed to protect national security.
