Novell Announces John Slitz Senior Vice President of Corporate Marketing
IBM Executive To Advance Marketing of Novell Products and Services
PROVO, UT -- August 5, 1997 -- As part of its strategy to further establish its
leadership in network services, Novell, Inc. today announced the appointment of John Slitz as senior vice
president of corporate marketing. Slitz comes to Novell from IBM where he was vice president of object
technology/application development marketing. At Novell he assumes responsibility for all of the
company's corporate marketing and corporate communications initiatives and will report to Novell
Chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt. The appointment is effective August 19. He will be based at Novell
offices in San Jose, California.
Schmidt said the appointment further solidifies the foundation upon which a new generation of network
services will be launched. He added that attracting world-class talent, like Slitz, is central to the company's
goal of becoming a major force in the expanding networking/Internet marketplace.
"Nearly every customer I meet praises Novell for its technology leadership but laments our shortcomings in
the marketing area. John brings the perfect combination of technical talent and marketing expertise. He has
exactly what Novell needs to deliver on our commitments to customers and shareholders. We're delighted to
have him on board."
Slitz brings a quarter of a century of high technology marketing expertise to Novell, much of which was
with IBM. He also served as a marketing consultant and marketing senior executive, including vice
president of marketing at Object Management Group, Inc., a non-profit consortium of computer software
developers and end-users focused on developing standards and promoting the uses of object
technology.
"The opportunity to work with Eric and the Novell team he is assembling is irresistible," Slitz said. "With
Eric at the helm, Novell's vision is clear, as is its ability to bring leading-edge technology products to
market. Moreover, the new streamlined organization can carry out his vision and firmly establish a new
growth trajectory based upon network and Internet/intranet products and services."
Slitz began his career at IBM and worked there in progressively more responsible positions until branching
out on his own 12 years later. He continued to hone his marketing skills as a senior executive with several
other firms, including two successful start-up ventures he co-founded. Slitz returned to IBM in 1995 as
vice president of object technology/application development marketing.
