Novell Delivers Advanced Internet Collaboration and Functionality with GroupWise
5.2
GroupWise 5.2 Improves Efficiency and Lowers Cost of Collaborating on The
Internet/Intranets
PROVO, Utah -- September 17, 1997 -- Novell, Inc. today announced
GroupWise® 5.2, the next version of Novell's premier collaboration product for corporate
networks
and intranets, is now shipping. With its broad range of Internet standards and enhanced
collaboration tools,
GroupWise 5.2 allows companies to leverage the Internet for everyday business use and to
improve the
efficiency of work processes. In addition, it expands users' ability to access different types of
information,
extends advanced collaboration to a variety of client platforms right out of the box and offers
improved
administration and management, which allows users to realize substantial savings in their cost of
ownership.
"This product places GroupWise in the spotlight as the best-of-breed solution available in the
Internet/intranet collaboration space," said Stewart Nelson, vice president and general manager,
Novell
Collaboration Services Group. "The robust, platform-independent and secure set of collaboration
tools
available with GroupWise 5.2 demonstrates our commitment to provide customers with
immediate
productivity at a price they can afford."
"With the familiar E-mail interface of GroupWise 5.2, we can put the power of the Internet into
the hands
of our most novice computer user and still leverage the performance, security and management
features of
the product," said Ron Nicholson, a groupware analyst at Georgetown University.
GroupWise 5.2 offers cross-platform, expanded E-mail solutions, including full document
management and
automated workflow capabilities, as part of its Universal Mailbox. The Universal Mailbox
provides users
with single-point access to personal calendaring, group scheduling, tasks, facsimiles, documents
and other message types both from the desktop and via the Internet using GroupWise
WebAccess.
GroupWise 5.2 also includes the ability to scan and store images and the freedom of remote
access via the
telephone.
Internet Standards Support
GroupWise 5.2 adds dial-up support for SMTP/MIME and includes server support for IMAP4
and POP3;
client and server support for LDAP; as well as standards that were previously supported with
GroupWise
5.1, including HTML, HTTP and TCP/IP.
Intranet Collaboration
GroupWise 5.2 offers a full-featured Web client. The Java and HTML 3 enhancements to
GroupWise
WebAccess make GroupWise as easy to use via the Internet as it is to use on the desktop, by
creating an
intuitive browser interface that is virtually identical to the GroupWise desktop environment.
Collaborative Functionality
Workflow& Imaging
GroupWise WorkFlow brings graphical workflow capabilities to every desktop by providing ad
hoc
workflow capabilities -- including sequential/parallel flows, author tracking, auto-attaching and
saving of
defined workflows -- that are accessible to all users. GroupWise Imaging merges the traditionally
separate
areas of desktop and production imaging and electronic publishing into a single, collaborative
imaging
environment.
Extended Platform Support
GroupWise 5.2 adds client support for both Macintosh (68000 and PowerMac) and UNIX
(Hewlett-Packard, IBM and Sun Microsystems), along with updated clients for Windows 3.1,
Windows 95
and Windows NT. GroupWise also adds support for the full set of agents on UNIX, in addition to
upgraded agents on all platforms currently supported by GroupWise 5.1 (IntranetWare, NetWare
and
Windows NT).
New Gateways
GroupWise now provides a GroupWise Gateway for Microsoft Mail -- a free add-on product that
allows
GroupWise and Microsoft Mail users to exchange messages transparently through GroupWise. It
is
currently downloadable from Novell's Web site at
http://www.novell.com/groupwise.
GroupWise also provides a GroupWise Pager Gateway, an NLM that allows GroupWise users to
send
messages directly to pagers and PCMCIA paging receivers, as easily as they send messages to
other
GroupWise users or a standard pager. The gateway will be available mid-October and can be
purchased
through a local Novell authorized reseller.
Administration& Management
Administration
The 32-bit NetWare Administrator (NWAdmin) for Windows 95 and NT is a snap-in
utility that
will offer network administrators a single point of administration from which they can manage
both
GroupWise 5.2 and their network. The addition of the Administration Object API will allow
customers,
systems integrators and third-party developers to access the administrative functions of
GroupWise
5.2.
Management
GroupWise Monitor is a snap-in utility for use with Novell's ManageWise, which allows a
network
administrator to dynamically monitor and manage GroupWise SNMP-instrumented agents.
GroupWise 5.2 Upgrade Window
Under the terms of the GroupWise upgrade program, users who purchase new or upgrade the U.S. version of
GroupWise 4.1,
5.0 or 5.1 licenses from July 21, 1997 through October 3, 1997 are eligible to receive an equal
number of
GroupWise 5.2 licenses, plus the cost of materials and handling, at no additional cost. A valid
proof of
purchase will be required upon submitting a claim. Additional information on how to receive an
upgrade is
