Novell Announces $1.5 Million Software Sale to New South Wales Department of School Education

115,000 GroupWise, IntranetWare, ManageWise Licenses to Connect Computers, Provide Internet Access for over 2,200 Schools

Provo, Utah -- October 13, 1997 -- Novell, Inc. today announced the sale of approximately $1.5 million U.S. in networking software to the New South Wales, Australia Department of School Education (DSE) for use in a wide-area network that will link computers and provide Internet access for hundreds of thousands of students, teachers, and administrators in more than 2,200 schools and 65 administrative offices. For the project, DSE has purchased 115,000 user licenses for Novell's GroupWise E-mail and collaboration solution, IntranetWare server operating system, and ManageWise network management product. DSE is the world's second largest education authority, second only to New York, (U.S.) State.

According to Frances Asher, DSE Acting Director of Technology, the Novell software will provide fast and secure electronic communication between all individuals on the network, be they principals, district superintendents, administrators or directors in District or State Offices.

"In the past our communication challenges have been compounded by the fact that our geographical area of responsibility spans thousands of kilometers," she said "The implementation of GroupWise as our prime communications channel will allow us to transmit electronic messages, schedule appointments, and send documents and forms instantaneously throughout the network, removing the reliance on post, courier or fax for sending documents.

"Any school will be able to connect all of its modern computers to the GroupWise system and can also build its own intranet to publish timetables, rosters and administrative information to suit its own needs. Both Windows and Apple computers can be supported on the new Novell network, eliminating the existing limitations of two separate systems."

Novell Directory Services - Power and Scalability

DSE will also achieve further productivity benefits in administration costs due to the sophisticated functionality of Novell Directory Service (NDS), a built-in component of IntranetWare that is also available for UNIX and NT Server operating systems. NDS provides administrators with access from a single location and login to information on all users, applications, and equipment on the network.

Frances Asher said: "A major factor in deciding to build this network with Novell was the proven strength of Novell's Directory Service. It has the power to handle a large directory such as ours and it can scale across the enterprise.

"NDS also works with Novell's ManageWise software to allow us to support and maintain the school file servers remotely. This allows the Department to share its network support resources across the state and it will certainly be a much smaller support team than would normally be considered necessary for a network of more than 115,000 users and 2,500 file servers."

Internet Pilot Study

Ms. Asher said that DSE had recently finished providing Internet connections to all schools, adding: "The potential to increase the number of Internet access points in each school is important and exciting." Showing the way is a network pilot conducted at Appin Public School, south of Sydney, where Novell's IntranetWare and a new cabling system has given the schoolchildren an Internet access point in every classroom. IntranetWare servers at Appin and other sites include all the software needed to support intranets and managed, secure access to the Internet.

Ms. Asher added: "Through this initiative with Novell, we are strategically positioning our education system to allow teachers and children to take full advantage of the educational resources on the Internet."

Competitive Price& Flexible Licensing

Two key aspects of the agreement were Novell's competitive pricing under its Education Licence Agreement and its flexible licensing policy.

"Under the terms of the agreement with Novell, we can distribute the 115,000 licences across the schools in whatever way best suits our requirements, and we have the freedom to adjust the licence allocations at any time if needs change from school to school," said Ms Asher.

"This is a huge benefit to DSE. We not only save due to the attractive pricing that we were able to negotiate with Novell, but also by avoiding the need to buy incremental software as the needs of individual sites change and grow. It provides DSE with a high degree of flexibility in the way we roll out the network now, and for our future plans."
