Novell Activates NT Server for the Enterprise
NDS for NT, Available Next Month, Helps Businesses Lower Cost and Complexity of
Deploying NT Servers in Enterprise Networks
NETWORLD+INTEROP, Atlanta, GA -- October 7, 1997 -- Extending its
industry-leading directory service to yet another computing platform, Novell®, Inc. today
announced that NDS for NT will be available to customers in November. Currently in
closed beta, NDS for NT provides businesses with the freedom to deploy and manage NT servers
and applications while avoiding the challenges and costs of managing networks with NT
Domains.
"Nearly every major corporation uses some combination of Novell and Microsoft products to run
their business," said Dr. Eric Schmidt, Novell chairman and CEO. "Novell's NDS for NT product
can improve the efficiency of doing business and reduce information technology costs for every
one of them. Enterprise customers ask us for only one thing -- to make their networks work.
That's what Novell is delivering to the enterprise with NDS for NT."
"For those organizations managing multiple NT Server domains, especially those used as
application servers, NDS for NT is a life-saver," said Robert Sakakeeny, director of field research,
Aberdeen Group. "For instance, those implementing Microsoft's Exchange for e-mail know that
they must maintain a directory of users on each Exchange server which requires NT Server
domains. With NDS for NT, a single cross-enterprise directory can be managed centrally,
allowing for changes made to a local directory to be synchronized without costly domain and trust
relationship administration."
NDS for NT benefits businesses, their network users and administrators by simplifying and
securing the networking of resources across NT and IntranetWare/NetWare® server
platforms. It reduces companies' network management costs, provides users with single log-on to
all resources wherever they are located on the network, and gives administrators one simple,
integrated utility from which to manage all NT and Novell users and resources. The market-
proven and powerful structure of NDS streamlines common administrative tasks to minimize
management time and expense. In addition to providing the easy-to-use NWAdmin, NDS
for NT offers integration with NT management utilities such as User Manager to minimize or
eliminate administrator training costs.
"GMAC has been very impressed with the single namebase and single sign-on capabilities of the
NDS for NT beta ," said Rodolphe Jabbour, manager of integration/test lab, GMAC. "With the
proven reliability and scalability of NDS now available for managing NT, we can deploy the NT-
dependent applications we need without the limitations and management costs associated with
domains."
"Our customers are anxious for the release of NDS for NT to assist them in managing their NT
Domains," said Bill Bancroft, executive vice president of technical solutions, GE Capital
Information Technology Solutions/US Operations. "Because Novell has extended the flexibility
and power of NDS to NT, customers now can manage NT in whatever way works best for
them."
Complete NT Integration
NDS for NT completes Novell's NT integration solution by providing the network management
capabilities customers need to build and maintain full-service networks and intranets. Novell now
provides a full complement of products that give users the freedom to build networks that match
their business needs. NT integration products, in addition to NDS for NT, include the
following:
- Novell Application Launcher 2.01 helps customers reduce the cost of software
management by automating application distribution and updates to NT Workstations and other
desktops via NDS;
- IntranetWare Client for Windows NT with Workstation Manager lets
customers integrate and manage NT desktops with IntranetWare/NetWare environments without
deploying NT servers and domains;
- Novell Administrator for Windows NT 2.0c allows administrators to synchronize NT
Domains with NDS;
- GroupWise® 5.2 offers industry-leading collaboration and e-mail capabilities for the
Internet/intranet on all major platforms including NT; and
- ManageWise 2.5, also announced today (see corresponding release entitled "Novell
Reduces Network, Server and Desktop Management Costs With ManageWise 2.5") provides
customers with virus protection, configuration management and remote control of networked
devices in mixed IntranetWare/NetWare and NT environments.
"Businesses want to deploy a variety of technologies in their network environments without
introducing complexity and interoperability issues," said Kevin McCarty, manager, Strategic
Technology, Arthur Andersen Business Consulting in Chicago. "Novell's integration products
allow us to address those issues while designing and implementing effective heterogeneous
networks. With NDS for NT in particular, we minimize interoperability issues and cut
administrative costs for both ourselves and our clients by managing mixed Novell/Microsoft
environments through a single common interface."
