Novell Achieves Web Document Management Milestone With GroupWise WebPublisher

"Jefferson Project" Technology Is First to Let Users Dynamically Publish to the Internet and Intranets through Secure , Familiar GroupWise Environment

PROVO, Utah -- October 20, 1997 -- Novell, Inc. today announced that its much-anticipated GroupWise™ WebPublisher, the industry's first Web document management solution that allows users to dynamically publish documents to the Internet and intranets, will ship by the end of October. GroupWise WebPublisher provides an enterprise solution for the creation and management of documents on the Internet and corporate intranets.

GroupWise users can now leverage the full power of the Internet for sharing information, while taking advantage of the security, management and administration features required to keep that information secure, up-to-date and easily accessible.

"GroupWise WebPublisher will let us share documents via the Internet as easily and securely as we do across a campus LAN," said Travis Berkley, LAN Support Supervisor at the University of Kansas. "More importantly, Novell gives users the ability to publish to the Web without my help, using only GroupWise and the application they choose to create the document."

GroupWise WebPublisher allows GroupWise users to leverage the powerful document management features of GroupWise to publish documents to the Web as easily as assigning user access to documents within GroupWise. Documents reside in the GroupWise library and are published dynamically to the Web by a server process whenever they are requested by a user, via a search or a specific URL. Any changes the author makes, either to the content or the access privileges of the document, will be automatically reflected on the Web.

GroupWise WebPublisher improves access to information through enhanced search capabilities, as well. Users looking for specific information on the corporate intranet will be able to perform a fast and accurate search of the full-text index maintained by GroupWise. The search results in a list of document titles from which the user can select a specific document.

Simplified Administration and Maintenance

By eliminating the need to update documents and links on the corporate Web site, GroupWise WebPublisher simplifies the administrator's job. When documents are updated in GroupWise, they will also be updated on the Web. GroupWise will automatically publish specified documents to corporate intranets or the Web, enabling administrators to spend more time implementing mission-critical intranet applications and less time translating documents into HTML or writing CGI scripts. In addition, GroupWise WebPublisher will provide GroupWise administrators with a familiar GroupWise interface for managing information on the Web.

"Until companies find ways to lessen the complexity and risk of sharing information over the Web, the Internet will continue to fall short of its full potential for collaboration," said Stewart Nelson, vice president of Novell's Collaboration Services Group. "GroupWise WebPublisher leverages the proven Novell security features available through GroupWise to provide freedom to the user within a structured environment, and ultimately allows customers to use the Web as a strategic business tool."

Pricing and Availability

GroupWise WebPublisher will be available for free download by the end of October at www.novell.com/groupwise.
