Novell Announces 12,500-User BorderManager Purchase by Michigan Family Independence
Agency
State Agency Will Use New Novell Product to Manage Employee Internet
Access
Provo, Utah -- October 20, 1997 -- Novell, Inc. today announced the purchase
by the Michigan Family Independence Agency (FIA) of a 12,500- user license for Novell
BorderManager, a new Novell Internet product that will allow the state agency to tightly manage
employee Internet access across its 150 offices. BorderManager figures in a network upgrade at
FIA that includes the implementation of Novell IntranetWare server operating systems with
Novell Directory Services (NDS) and GroupWise E-Mail and collaboration software to reduce
the agency's long-term technology costs, improve internal communication, respond to clients
faster, and enhance access and management of both internal and Internet information.
BorderManager, which first shipped in August, 1997, is one of a series of new products marking
the transition of Novell, the world's largest networking software company, into a market leader in
Internet and intranet software. The product is unique in featuring an integrated set of network
services such as Internet content filtering, security policy enforcement, firewall protection from
outside hackers, and web performance acceleration in a single software package that can be
managed with NDS, Novell's industry-leading directory service for naming, finding, and
manipulating network information. From a single point of administration, organizations such as
FIA can use BorderManager and NDS to manage the border between any two networks,
including the interface between internal networks and the Internet.
"Internet access is a valuable communication and information gathering tool for FIA, but it also
requires the responsibility to use the Internet in an appropriate and effective way," said Stan
Rusiecki, director of FIA's technical services division. "Novell BorderManager is the first solution
that enables us to manage and monitor Internet access across our agency, ensuring that the right
people are on the Internet for the right reasons."
According to Rusiecki, NDS is one of FIA's chief reasons for choosing Novell as a primary
software vendor for its network upgrade. FIA plans to supplement 15 Novell server systems now
up and running with up to 150 IntranetWare servers. These local and regional systems will
provide file and distributed print services for FIA employees, host BorderManager, run
GroupWise E-mail and collaboration tools, and establish NDS as a mechanism for secure access
and management of information across the network.
"NDS enables our directors and managers to travel to any office, sit down at a workstation or
plug a laptop into the network, and immediately gain their appropriate access to files,
applications, GroupWise E-mail, printers and other resources," said Rusiecki. "As we consolidate
our organization to serve our clients better, this capability to access information from any point on
our network is increasingly more important."
