Novell and COMDEX Partner to Present the Largest Live Single-Directory Network at
COMDEX/Fall '97
"The COMDEX IntraNet - Novell Connecting Points" Allows Over 215,000 Attendees at
the World's
Largest High-tech Trade Show to Contact Each Other and Their Offices
COMDEX, LAS VEGAS -- October 27, 1997 -- Novell, Inc. announced today
that it
will create one of the world's largest live single-directory networks at COMDEX/Fall '97, which
will enable
more than 215,000 attendees at one of the world's largest high technology trade show to stay
connected to each
other and their offices, while allowing them to access a full schedule of event activities on the
COMDEX
website.
"The COMDEX IntraNet - Novell Connecting Points" will allow all registered attendees to send
and retrieve
E-mail, schedule appointments and access the Internet from four central
locations on the show floor or from their hotel rooms via a browser during the November 17-21
show. The
massive network will manage an estimated one million messages per day, for a total of five million
messages by the end of the event.
The COMDEX IntraNet- Novell Connecting Points is the result of a collaboration among Novell,
Compaq
and Bay Networks. The partnership ensures security, reliability and performance of the system
with a high
volume of messages expected to be processed at the show.
"The COMDEX IntraNet - Novell Connecting Points lets people see firsthand the power and
performance of
Novell solutions in some of the most demanding conditions imaginable," said Stewart Nelson, vice
president of Novell's Internet products group.
"This is the first time in history that COMDEX attendees will have access to virtual offices," said
Bill Sell,
show director for COMDEX/Fall. "The COMDEX IntraNet provides a valuable service to all
convention
participants, enabling them to focus on what is happening at the tradeshow, as well as allowing
communications with their offices. In essence, the system provides a messaging center wrapped
around a
complete and fully accessible virtual tradeshow guide, providing up to the minute
information."
Connecting Points, which is managed and administered from a central network room in the main
lobby of
the Las Vegas Convention Center, features Novell's award-winning products, including
GroupWise®, an advanced collaboration system running on IntranetWare, which
leverages
the power of Novell Directory Services (NDS) for security and administration, and
NDS
for NT, which gives users the power of enterprise networking for NT. Novell's
BorderManager®
family of products manages access to the Internet. This sophisticated combination of software is
powered
by Compaq's workstations and servers, with Bay Networks supplying reliable hubs and switches
to ensure
connection 24 hours a day.
"With Connecting Points, one of the most demanding real-world network applications ever built,
Compaq
and Novell are demonstrating the power, reliability and scalability of our industry-standard
solutions
developed for enterprise-class environments," said Mary McDowell, vice president of marketing,
server
products division, Compaq Computer Corporation.
