PHH Selects Novell Directory Services, IntranetWare, Application Launcher as Strategic Components of Enterprise Network

Reduces Administration and Management Costs with Upgrade to Directory-Enabled Network

Provo, Utah -- October 29, 1997 -- Novell, Inc. today announced that PHH Vehicle Management Services, a subsidiary of HFS Incorporated, has selected Novell Directory Services (NDS), Novell's IntranetWare server operating platform, and related Novell Application Launcher software as key components of an enterprise network connecting over 1,500 users at locations in the U.S. and Canada. The Novell software will interoperate with diverse systems in the PHH network environment, including Windows 95 desktops, Sun Microsystems servers running an enterprise database, and IBM mainframes.

The network upgrade follows the successful pilot roll-out of directory-enabled Novell software in PHH vehicle maintenance centers, which led to dramatic reductions in network administration and management costs. PHH, an industry leader in leasing cars and other vehicles to businesses, now plans to use Novell software to achieve similar efficiencies across its data network, as well as improved access to network information, applications, and printers.

"Our pilot program has demonstrated the dramatic improvements in network administration and management costs that can be achieved using NDS and the Novell Application Launcher to secure our Windows 95 workstations and manage them from a single location and login," said Tim Talbot, PHH director of technology deployment. "Support calls and other demands on our support resources are way down. At the same time, we've gained powerful new capabilities for adding new users to the network, distributing software to their desktops, and providing secure access to the appropriate applications and resources. These technology improvements allow our business to operate more efficiently and further enhance the excellent customer service that has made PHH an industry leader."

In the course of the network upgrade, PHH plans to replace older Novell servers over the next six months and deploy approximately 30 new, directory-enabled IntranetWare servers. The new Novell servers will provide file and print access across the network, centralized network administration and management with built-in NDS, and automated software distribution with the compatible Novell Application Launcher. NDS, Novell's industry-leading directory service, provides users and administrators with a single point of access and a single point of management for all resources on the network.

One advantage of Novell's NDS and NAL software, according to Talbot, is the ability to closely manage user access to applications and allow users to securely access their files and applications from any point on the network. "In our maintenance center, for example, the automotive technicians don't need access to the same set of applications required by a business manager," said Talbot. "With the Novell software, we can provide each individual with access to the right set of applications while maintaining efficient control of all the resources distributed across our network."

Mission-Critical Reliability

The stable performance of Novell's server operating systems also figured in the PHH decision to select Novell software for its network upgrade. PHH has recorded 99.97% uptime with its existing Novell servers, a level of reliability required to support business-critical applications used in vehicle leasing and maintenance. PHH also cited excellent technical support services from Novell's Premium Support and Enterprise Consulting organizations as factors in providing a high-performance network.

"Our Novell servers provide stability equal to many of our mainframe systems," said Talbot. "This is what we need and expect from the network vendor that supports our critical applications."

Integration of Windows 95 desktops with mainframe systems used to process order and maintenance information is another benefit of Novell's IntranetWare servers to PHH. Novell's NetWare for SAA software, running on IntranetWare, enables PHH to provide users with transparent desktop access to mainframe data and centrally manage this access.
