Novell and Compaq Introduce SmartStart Installation Program to Novell's Corporate License
Agreement (CLA)
Novell and Compaq join to deliver optimized networking solutions on Compaq servers, provide
joint customers dependable, high-performance network servers
San Jose, CA -- November 13, 1997 -- Novell and Compaq announced today the
availability of the Compaq SmartStart Installation Program for Novell Customer Connections®
Corporate License Agreement (CLA) customers. SmartStart, an integration tool that dramatically
simplifies the process of configuring a well-integrated, reliable server through a single, streamlined CD-
based process, comes standard with purchases of Compaq ProLiant and ProSignia servers. The program
guarantees a reliable, optimized configuration, facilitates standardized server configuration across
organizations, and saves time in server setup.
"Compaq and Novell have worked together to make all user versions of NetWare 3.12 and IntranetWare
available through SmartStart," said David Trotter, Vice President of Global OEM Sales and Channel
Programs at Novell. "Customers who install these Novell products using SmartStart can efficiently
optimize their servers the first time."
NetWare and IntranetWare software is delivered on the Novell Software from Compaq CD, which
is included in the SmartStart package. To participate in the SmartStart program, CLA customers simply
purchase NetWare or IntranetWare software using their standard CLA software license purchasing process
and placing orders with their chosen CLA Approved Partner.
"The installation process has been optimized for customers purchasing Novell products through the CLA
program," said Bob Page, Novell's Director of OEM Sales. When they purchase their licenses, CLA
customers can also purchase Master Software, which contains the serialized license diskettes that will be
used as activation keys to unlock the software installed from the Novell Software from Compaq
CD. Then, using the SmartStart installation process, customers may begin installing software up to the
quantity of software licenses for which they have placed an order. When the customer is prompted by the
installation screen for a SmartStart Activation Key, the customer inserts their CLA master version
serialized license diskette.
Novell's Master License Agreement (MLA) customers also have the ability to use the SmartStart program
to install NetWare and IntranetWare. They follow a similar installation process as CLA customers and
order their licenses and Master Software from Novell using the MLA Schedule C order form.
"Compaq servers and the SmartStart process are ideal for the business-critical environments of Novell's
large CLA and MLA customers," said Mary McDowell, Vice President of Marketing, Server Products
Division, Compaq Computer Corporation. "By incorporating SmartStart installation into the MLA and
CLA programs, Compaq and Novell are responding to evolving customer needs to simplify the software
acquisition process."
Compatibility with the CLA program is just one of the new features of the SmartStart 3.50. SmartStart
activation keys from Compaq are no longer required to gain the full integration benefits of a SmartStart
assisted install of Novell IntranetWare and NetWare 3.12. Customers may purchase NetWare or
IntranetWare from any source, including shrink-wrap from any Novell reseller or directly from
Compaq.
