Highlight
Novell's Momentum toward Internet and Intranet Leadership
COMDEX, LAS VEGAS -- November 17, 1997 -- Novell, Inc. today
provided a
dramatic illustration of how its networking products surpass all others in meeting the integration
and
scalability needs of enterprise customers when it unveiled "The COMDEX IntraNet -- Novell
Connecting
Points," the world's largest, live, single-directory tree network. Built to handle as many as
250,000 users,
"The COMDEX IntraNet -- Novell Connecting Points" will enable attendees of the world's largest
technology trade show to stay connected to each other and their offices, while allowing them to
access a full
schedule of event activities on the COMDEX Web site.
The result of a collaboration among Novell, Compaq Computer Corporation, Bay Networks and
ZD
COMDEX& FORUMS, "The COMDEX IntraNet -- Novell Connecting Points" will allow all
registered
COMDEX attendees to send and retrieve E-mail, schedule appointments and access the Internet
from four
central locations on the show floor or from their hotel rooms via a browser during the November
17-21
show. The massive network will manage an estimated one million messages per day, for a total of
five
million messages by the end of the event.
The network, which is managed and administered from a central Network Operating Center in the
main
lobby of the Las Vegas Convention Center, features Novell's award-winning products, including
GroupWise®, an advanced collaboration system running on IntranetWare, which
leverages
the power of Novell Directory Services (NDS) for security and administration; and
Novell's
BorderManager family of products, which manages access to the Internet. This sophisticated
combination
of software is powered by Compaq workstations and servers, with Bay Networks supplying
reliable hubs
and switches to ensure connection 24 hours a day.
The network highlights Novell's commitment to delivering Internet-enabled products in Internet
time, which
has been punctuated in recent months by the achievement of key product milestones such as the
delivery of
new BorderManager services and GroupWise 5.2.
"The requirements of a show like COMDEX are not unlike those of a networked enterprise," said
Stewart
Nelson, senior vice president of Novell's Internet Products Group. "'The COMDEX IntraNet --
Novell
Connecting Points' beautifully illustrates the ability of Novell and its partners to provide
performance,
reliability, security and scalability in any environment, regardless of time and demand
pressures."
"As the world's largest showcase for new technology ideas, technologies and solutions, it seems
only fitting
that COMDEX should provide its attendees with new solutions for getting the most out of the
show," said
Bill Sell, show director for COMDEX/Fall. "For COMDEX, the show is the enterprise. Novell's
ability to
deliver a system of this incredible scope and functionality within our exacting requirements made
it the only
choice for a show-wide system."
"Connecting Points is an excellent example of how Novell and Compaq are teaming together to
power the
evolution of standards-based networking," said Ronnie Ward, vice president and general manager,
Enterprise Solutions Division, Compaq Computer Corporation. "The development of this
first-of-its-kind
network demonstrates our ability to deliver dependable, interoperable solutions under the most
extreme
conditions and highest volumes of use."
Easy, Round-the-Clock Access

About Novell Products
GroupWise 5.2 offers cross-platform, expanded E-mail solutions, including single-point access to
full
document management, automated workflow capabilities, personal calendaring, group scheduling,
tasks,
voice mail, facsimiles, documents and other message types both from the desktop and via the
Internet using
GroupWise WebAccess.
Novell BorderManager is the industry's first integrated family of directory-based network services
that
manages, secures and accelerates user access to information at every network border.
IntranetWare is Novell's comprehensive platform for a modern, full-service intranet, providing
both IP and
IPX access to intranet resources such as Web servers, FTP servers and WAN connections to the
Internet.
NDS, Novell's directory services offering, makes locating and using information and resources on
a
network easier by providing a single point of access and management. NDS provides a proven,
scalable
architecture for maintaining information on millions of objects within a single directory tree. This
week,
NDS scalability and fault tolerance was validated by KeyLabs, Inc., an independent testing
laboratory, at 2
million users and more than 14 million attributes without significant impact to network
performance. A
white paper detailing this testing, which included the downing of two-thirds of the network
without
interruption to the remainder of the directory tree, is available this week at www.novell.com/nds. With its scalability, constant availability
and its
cross-platform capabilities, NDS saves customers time and resources that might otherwise be
spent
maintaining and coordinating multiple directories.
