Novell, Vinca Partner to Add Leading High-Availability Software Solution to Novell
Product
Line with StandbyServer for NetWare/IntranetWare
Novell's StandbyServer Protects Customers Against Hardware and Software
Failures
PROVO, Utah -- January 20, 1998 -- The leader in networking software,
Novell Inc.
today announced the addition of StandbyServer for the NetWare®; and
IntranetWare platforms to
the Novell product line. Novell and Vinca Corporation are partnering to make StandbyServer
available as a
Novell product, expanding the range of high-availability software solutions for Novell customers.
Novell's
StandbyServer is a software solution enabling customers to mirror data between servers, creating
a fully
redundant system that protects their businesses against hardware and software failures.
StandbyServer for NetWare/IntranetWare advances Novell's commitment to provide customers
with more
flexibility and choice when implementing a high-availability networking solution. Novell and
Vinca are
working together to develop advanced, high-availability and clustering solutions that meet a range
of
customer needs for increasingly reliable, scalable and manageable networking solutions.
"Novell is delivering on its promise to provide fault-tolerant solutions that help to eliminate
network
downtime and reduce the total cost of network ownership for our customers," said Michael
Bryant, director
of marketing for Novell clustering solutions. "Novell and Vinca are experienced partners
delivering a higher
level of system availability today. Novell's StandbyServer is a mature, proven solution that
expands the
complete business protection package that we can now offer directly to our customers, channel
partners,
and OEMs."
Protection from network downtime
By allowing customers to mirror their servers, StandbyServer provides a redundant system that
can
instantaneously switch, or failover, to the standby machine in the event of a server hardware or
software
failure. The resulting high-availability solution enables organizations to reduce or eliminate server
downtime, a key to keeping critical applications up and running, establishing high levels of
productivity,
and maintaining a competitive advantage.
"StandbyServer is a strategic part of our network configuration," said Theo Ekelmans, product
specialist,
Unisource, a global telecommunications company. "If our network is down we are assessed
substantial
penalties for each minute, so we can't afford downtime. StandbyServer has enhanced our
reputation for
dependability and reliability as a data communications provider."
"The bottom line is that StandbyServer allows us to provide better and more continuous service
to our
customers," said Bob Allen Adams, senior LAN/WAN analyst, United HealthCare. "It also allows
us to
maximize the use of our IS Staff, saving the company money that is eventually passed on to our
customers."
Meeting diverse customer needs
With Novell StandbyServer, customers can use any combination of NetWare-certified server
hardware for
the mirrored pair, eliminating the need to deploy identical servers. StandbyServer also allows
customers to
choose from a broad selection of non-proprietary, industry-standard LAN adapters and server
interconnects
including Ethernet, fast Ethernet, ATM, and FDDI. Some of these advanced networking
technologies like
FDDI allow for longer physical distances between the mirrored servers enabling disaster recovery
for large
environments such as corporate campuses.
StandbyServer's flexible storage options offer support for either local mirrored disks in each
server or
shared-disk environments, freeing customers from the requirement to duplicate storage space.
Broadly
compatible with existing business networks, StandbyServer includes support for all versions of
NetWare
3.12 and above as well as IntranetWare for Small Business. The product also supports
symmetric
multiprocessing and all Novell-certified NetWare-Loadable Modules from Novell and third
parties.
A phased approach to high availability and clustering
Novell's high-availability strategy addresses customer needs at multiple levels by providing
continuous
network operation and data availability. Today, Novell offers a range of high availability and fault
tolerant
solutions. These solutions include NetWare SFT III, that Novell will continue to make available
to
NetWare 4.11 customers to provide non-stop, automatic recovery from server hardware failures.
And with
this announcement, StandbyServer provides an alternative high availability solution that is broadly
applicable in application environments or situations involving mixed hardware.
Novell continues to work with Vinca and other partners to enhance Novell high-availability
products with
technologies consistent with customer needs. Looking to the future, Novell is developing the
Orion
clustering solution to address availability, performance, and scalability issues for
high-performance,
distributed data networks. These development efforts will make data, applications, and network
services
available to users anytime, anywhere.
Pricing and availability
Novell's StandbyServer will be listed in Novell's product catalog and will be available the
beginning of
February to customers through authorized Novell distribution channels. The suggested retail price
is US
$3999 per server pair.
