Novell Unveils Free GroupWise Gateways for Lotus Notes and Microsoft Exchange
Gateways ease migration and bring the manageability of GroupWise to mixed groupware
environments
PROVO, Utah -- January 26, 1998 -- Novell, Inc. today announced availability of a
GroupWise® gateway for Lotus Notes and the beta version of a GroupWise gateway for Microsoft
Exchange. These new gateways provide a unifying framework for network users with diverse collaboration
solutions, easing migration and improving productivity through seamless interoperation between Novell
GroupWise and Lotus Notes or Microsoft Exchange. The GroupWise gateway for Lotus Notes is now
available free for download on Novell's Web site, and the open beta of GroupWise gateway for Microsoft
Exchange will be available free for download on Novell's Web site at the end of the first quarter of
1998.
"These products are further evidence of Novell's commitment to giving businesses the freedom to choose
the networking solutions that best meet their business needs," said Paul Smart, vice president, Novell
Collaboration Services Group. "The Novell GroupWise gateways allow customers in heterogeneous
environments to capitalize on the power of Novell GroupWise and Novell NetWare to provide
advanced E-mail functionality, improved management and control, and fast performance."
With the GroupWise gateways, companies can now enable various departments to communicate seamlessly
and transparently with each other, regardless of the type of collaboration solutions they use. The gateways
not only provide interoperability, but allow network administrators to easily manage heterogenous network
environments.
The GroupWise gateways offer Lotus Notes and Microsoft Exchange users an easy migration path to
Novell GroupWise by allowing network administrators to effortlessly transfer individuals or groups to
GroupWise; and by providing the new GroupWise user with an intuitive user-interface that requires
minimal training. A migration capability is integrated into the gateway and is not a separate utility, which
provides seamless co-existence of collaboration environments while executing a migration.
In addition to easing migration issues, the GroupWise gateways for Lotus Notes and Microsoft Exchange
also effectively address interoperability challenges by allowing users of differing collaboration systems to
seamlessly exchange messages and information, by transporting and converting GroupWise messages,
including appointments, mail, notes, phone messages and tasks, into a mail message format supported by
Lotus Notes and Microsoft Exchange.
Each gateway automatically converts GroupWise messages into the Lotus Notes or Microsoft Exchange
message format and sends the message to its respective domain via its respective server. All features that
are supported in each collaboration environment are preserved in the translation process. The GroupWise
gateways translate messages sent to Lotus Notes or Microsoft Exchange users into the user's native
message format, preserving all original message content.
The Novell GroupWise gateways also make it easy for network administrators to keep all user lists and
address books from each collaboration system synchronized and updated on a regular basis through
support for directory synchronization and directory exchange. Once the gateways are configured and the
directory exchange has taken place, each user can automatically access the names from all the address
books within an organization regardless of the collaboration system in use.
The GroupWise gateways recognize most of the send options native to Lotus Notes and Microsoft
Exchange, such as delivery status, priority status, timed delivery, security labels, reply requests and return
notification.
The gateway for Lotus Notes which runs on the OS/2 platform, requires GroupWise version 4.1 or higher.
The GroupWise gateway for Microsoft Exchange which runs on the Windows NT platform, requires
GroupWise 5.2 version or higher.
